Default Dawn of the dead 1978 Umbrella Bluray

Hi, so i recently purchased off bestbuy.com the dawn of the dead bluray. It had no image so i assumed it was the starz bluray, however once i received it today it was another version. It is the Umbrella Entertainment Bluray...

Has anyone had or have this version on bluray? I tried to scan through the forums and google, but no one seems to have reviewed or even mention this bluray...

HELP please...

Looks like the Umbrella Blu is from Australia:

They have It at Diabolik also, I was eying it but I figure I don't want to watch the movie again until an Ultimate set gets underway that is worthwhile. Give myself some distance from it so it will seem fresh

Hopefully this won't turn into a bluray version of the famous Anchor Bay double-dips from back in the DVD days. A studio just needs to get this a 4K transfer and put out a set with decent features and PQ/AQ. The film definitely deserves it.

Thank you everyone for your posts. I will upload pictures in a little while, but it is the Australian release. It seems to be cropped, and lots of print damage. But it isnt too distracting. Also the ghosting still seems present as well. The US disk still seems superior... Does anyone have this Australian disk, I would love to hear your thoughts on it..

Guess i will buy the US disk once i get paid

Anchor Bay no longer has the distribution rights to Dawn. The film's producer has them.

I have the Umbrella disc you have, the U.S. Starz bd and the Japanese set with all three versions. Unfortunately there isn't a definitive version. All three are acceptable but far from reference quality.

Which one do you find the best in PQ and Audio Buck135?

If only the rights holders for the various Romero zombie flicks would get together for a definitive boxed set from Shout. But that's so not going to happen.

The producer Richard Rubinstein spent a lot of money on a pointless 3D conversion of the film two years ago and is likely trying to find a buyer so he can recoup his costs. Nobody wants the 3D version, hence rights holders not renewing their licenses or paying the money Rubinstein would require to recoup his investment. I've no idea how this might be resolved, but it's one reason why the film is not back in a definitive version yet. Rubinstein should have saved his money, then re-licensed it to Arrow for a 4K double-dip.

Converting the film has cost in the $6 million range, which is something considering the original cost around $685,000.

I finally got a copy of this, now that it's OOP. I had to order it from the UK! Anyway, it's nothing spectacular, that's for sure, but it's considerably better than the DVD. As I prefer the theatrical version over the other two, this will be my go-to disc whenever I watch the film (which is probably once a year or so). I like the orangier look that it has over the AB disc. As we may not see a real release of it as long as 3D Conversion Man is alive, I'd suggest picking this up while it's still only in the 25-30 range on the secondary market.

Nope, just the regular. What was on it? I can't find anything in these forums about it really.

I still have the four disc DVD set, so if it's just SD extras I'm probably OK without it

Yep its just a DVD, but it does have a few nice features:
  • Fan of the Dead (52 mins)
  • Document of the Dead (84 mins)
  • Document of the Dead - Lost Interview (20 mins)
  • Document of the Dead - Deleted Scenes (7 mins) and...
  • Umbrella trailers (Day of the Dead - Contaigium, The Crazies, Suspiria, The Hills Have Eyes)

Sorry for the delayed response. I didn't see your question until now. I'm really struggling to answer this question. The Japanese Happinet set I would say is superior in picture and sound, but it is plagued with issues. Honestly, my favorite version (as I have 20+ versions of the film from laserdisc to blu-ray) is the fan created "Extended Mall Hours" cut which can be found on YouTube.

Rubenstein is a boorish p***k, and he won't merely write off his bad investment and move on to bringing out a definitive version. About 20 years ago at a great genre festival in London, there were due to play a print of the Argento cut of Dawn of the Dead (Zombi) with all attendees excited at such a rare treat. The very morning of the festival, the organisers received faxes from two of the producers (one of them being Rubenstein) ordering them to cease and desist, as merely playing the movie would affect re-release plans.

Yep, I was one of those among the rather annoyed audience, and given that this was only a few years after Rubenstein utterly screwed-over his old friend and collaborator George Romero (on Pet Semetary) it has left me with a real dislike for the guy and his ethics.

Given that there is now a re-remake of Day of the Dead in the works, this really is a guy content on making money from his glory days, and someone that stubborn isn't going to let his ego cave and write off his 3D folly, so no new scan of the original Dawn.

He's resting on his Laurel...
