I just got the Xbox One X yesterday as my first 4k blu ray player.
I cannot get the settings to allow bitstream out audio, or 5.1/7.1 uncompressed. It is stuck on stereo. When I try to select the other settings an error pops up to verify my receiver can decode 5.1/bitstream. I had my original Xbox One working correctly with the bitstream audio setting. My setup is a TCL P Series 55 in. 4k HDR tv. The Xbox One X is in the HDMI 1 spot. My Sony receiver (cannot figure out exact model, bought in 2013 for $350, 7.2 says HiRes audio and 4k/3D pass through) is connected to the HDMI 3 for ARC audio. With this setup 4k blu ray works great and looks amazing. The tv flashes the HDR logo on startup. However, only stereo sound is working. I tried putting the Xbox hdmi in the receiver and a message popped up that video quality would not be the best and the picture was really bad. Cannot I watch 4k blu ray and get DTS-HD audio using this receiver? |

ARC does not pass lossless codecs, only lossy ones. The lossless ones get converted to stereo PCM. If there's a separate lossy audio track on the disc, like a standard Dolby Digital, it's possible that could be passed via ARC. Or if the Xbox has an option to convert lossless audio to lossy (I don't know), that could possibly work. But unless you get a new receiver or a UHD BD player with dual audio outputs, you cannot get both 4k HDR video and lossless surround audio.

If you go into the Xbox settings, under "Disc and Blu-ray," there is a setting called "Let my receiver decode audio." If you check that box, the Xbox should pass bitstream audio when playing Blu-ray discs. If that box is not checked, the console will decode the audio itself and send out PCM.

The “let my receiver decode audio” button wouldn’t give me any sound when checked unfortunately.
I believe my best bet with this current setup is to take the audio from the Xbox as stereo uncompressed and use the “HD Digital Cinema Sound” setting that I think simulates surround sound. At least it is surround sound, obviously not ideal but I can live with it until I can afford a new receiver. I found out I have the Sony STRDH750, that has 4k pass through, however is not HDCP 2.2 compliant. |
