Default Mu8000 vs Mu9000 vs Sony X900e

Hello All,

I am trying to see if I can get any insight on these 3 tv's. I really had my sights set on an OLED, but the Mrs doesn't feel that I should spend $1600 on a tv so I am looking at these. I would be using to watch movies at night (4k blu-rays, apple tv 4k, and vudu), playing the xbox one x, netflix, and nintendo switch. Which tv would you recommend and why?

You may have already purchased but if not I have a video for you.
Afterwards you can look up the Sony X900e on this same site if you wish.

Sony X900e..... the MU8000 is fairly "meh", and the Mu9000 isn't much better.

the Vizio P series and X900e are both better than the samsungs this year.

Seconded. I've been pretty much saying the same thing every time this question seems to come up lately. I've got the previous years KS8000 Series and I'd pick up that Sony out of those 3. I've heard just great things about it.

yup, the Q series from Samsung would be good contenders (though still edge lit I BELIEVE), but Samsung went full retard this year and tried to price their Q series in line with OLED's and failed miserably. the KS8000 series was the last great affordable TV from them before they tried to pass the MU series off as the successor and try to fight for LG's spot in the premium displays

Yeah I think I'm going to go with the Sony X900e. It's $999 right now and I don't think that I can find a better deal. I used to be all Samsung but this year they seemed to really drop the ball. If he Q7 were $999 I may consider it. I really wanted an LG OLED but I can't seem to get myself to put out another $600. Really wanted the HDR and DV.

I have the 55x900e and love It! You won't regret it especially at the discount prices.

I have an x900e. I've heard that the Mu's are getting HDR10+, and the sony has neither that nor DV.

I'm thinking when a playstation comes out with better hdr, then I may be shopping for another tv.

Me and my friend are both looking at two of these models ourselves in the 65" size. He pulled the trigger first going with the Samsung 65" MU900. He let Best Buy come out and calibrate it and the picture does look good, however I know that it could probably look better with some tweaking. Personally I went with the Sony 65" X900e after plenty of researching and all I can say is WOW!!!!! I'm still tweaking around with the settings but the picture is remarkable. The black levels are very inky and the color pops in ways that I have only seen in OLEDS. For the price range that this Sony can be had for now you will not find a better picture, period!!!! Sony got it right with this model. My friend is returning his Samsung MU900 for this Sony. Get this Sony X900e model, you will not be disappointed at all.

I'm mulling the Samsung 82" MU8000 since its $2639 on Samsung.com right now and 10% CB from Discover...Currently have a 4 yr old 6000 series Samsung 75" so would be an upgrade for sure.

Is no one else matching that price? Because dealing with Samsung directly if there is a problem is more of a headache than actually dealing with an online or actual store. I heard quite a few horror stories in the KS 8 Series owners thread back in the day. I ordered mine from ABT and it came with white glove service where they set everything up for me. So might be worth checking out to see if they'll price match if you are set on it. Me? If I was in the market would go with the Sony.

I just went with the Sony 75X900E, as a replacement for a failing Samsung 65" 8000. The full-array direct LED local dimming backlight feature made all the difference when comparing picture quality to the current Samsung models. Sets at comparable prices, including Samsung and LG, just didn't measure up to the 900E. I put it in service about three weeks ago and have not yet had it fully calibrated. That will happen later this week. But even at the current factory settings, the picture is outstanding; really looking forward to seeing the performance after calibration.

It's their "employee pricing". If they aren't logged in with an account like that when checking, shows up as $3299 so would have trouble matching probably. I do have same hesitation on the online purchase thing, though my current TV was from Amazon and didn't have a problem there (back when they matched TV prices, got a killer deal at the time there too). The 900E would be about $400 more for the 75" vs 82" MU8000 right now.

I actually ended up with a Vizio P Series tv. I was able to find a great deal locally and got the 65 inch for $900. It came will a full warranty so I jumped on it. I originally got the x900e but when I found the Vizio for that price I took it back. I am loving the great blacks in a dark movie environment.

Default MU9000 is a superior product

I hate to disagree with everyone, but I have now owned both the x900e and MU9000. I had two problems with the MU9000 and several problems with the x900e. I'm quite suspicious of rtings.com and quantum apotheosis at this point... Here's my take on these two tvs by comparison (I am leaving details about sound out as I use a soundbar) Note that I was able to get the MU9000 and X900E both on sale so they were both around $2500.

x900e:

pros:

- superior local dimming to mu9000 - this is expected to be better with full array backlit LEDs over edge lit LEDs (with the exception perhaps of some special edge lit LEDs that have multiple rows of lighting)
- color range is a bit better, but only seems to come out in 4k content and you really have to tweak the settings on this (it does add an extra pop when you get it right)
- picture in picture is nice although I couldn't seem to get it to work for two cable channels (only two separate inputs)
- remote plays nicely with PS4

cons:

- very dark.. if you have a few windows you will have a miserable daytime viewing experience with movies
- wireless adapter can't handle bandwidth necessary for 4k content (you have to wire it directly to an LAN cable)
- OS is super laggy and unintuitive
- remote has to be pointed at a very specific position to work
- MOTION BLUR! the motion blur is terrible - this goes beyond the soap opera effect which you can mostly get rid of with the right settings
- bad input lag
- Sony touts all this extra video processing, but I was unimpressed on upconversion of older content (samsung does better but upconversion on both seems to introduce judder although the judder is mostly bearable on both)
- some details like lines on faces are really clear, but finer details especially in moving shots, like sweeping shots over a sandy beach or over water, can not be handled by this tv (planet earth II will give you some good examples of this)
- the remote has a dedicated netflix button... $3000 tv with a dedicated netflix button... they should just give you the ability to make netflix super easy to access on the tv like with Tizen OS
- IR Blaster? Seriously? More wires?!
- seems only to know how to handle standard frame rates, but struggles when frame rates change
- vignette effect is very noticeable on white screens - I feel like I'm watching InstagramTV if that were a real thing
- blooming is surprisingly pretty bad although this may be due to my smooth motion settings which I'm using to reduce the soap opera effect as much as possible

overall on this tv I feel like Sony did the absolute bare minimum on everything just to get features that people tested without focusing on the actual overall picture quality and experience

MU9000:

pros:

- excellent picture with better contrast and still gets pretty deep blacks despite poor local dimming
- fast and responsive OS with less of a learning curve - easy to customize shortcuts so your favorite programs are very accessible
- I would argue that it's aesthetically more pleasing although the stand takes up more room
- excellent up-conversion of older content
- supports HDR and HDR10+ and doesn't seem to ever struggle handling whatever is thrown at it (the sony on the other hand feels like it wouldn't even be capable of dolby vision even if they wanted to offer that upgrade down the road)
- no motion blur unless you want it (I really don't understand why people like this effect - I think companies did this by accident by not having enough processing power and then decided they would call it a "feature")
- acceptable input lag for gaming
- does not struggle when frame rates change
- better cable management - the one connect box is awesome
- modern and minimal controller although the lack of a number pad is annoying at times

cons:

- dynamic mode can get very dark at times and it seems nonsensical.. I find it's best to avoid this mode
- my PS4 Pro seemed to have an issue where it was cutting out periodically when streaming 4K HDR content or playing 4K HDR games - folks seem to have this problem with the PS4 Pro in general, but I have not experienced it yet with the x900e (will update this thread if I experience it between now and when I get my MU9000 replacement) - the workaround was to set
the resolution to 2160 YUV420, but I'm still not clear if this is a PS4 Pro problem or an issue with several models of TVs across various brands
- the reason I returned my MU9000 in the first place - stuck pixels - hoping this was just a QC issue that is not widespread, but I will update this thread if I start to have similar issues with my new MU9000

Overall I was very satisfied with the MU9000 and happy to be getting it back. I thought the x900e was going to be the better TV, but I have to say I was just not that impressed by the x900e.

The x900e is too dark? I got one a couple of weeks ago, and coming up from a Panasonic plasma, it seems incredibly bright to me. And that's after turning down the brightness.

My experience is in reverse. I have a KS8500 and tried to go with another Samsung even though KS8500 had some issues with local dimming and how it handles blooming on top and bottom of the screen when HDR gets really bright. I got the MU9000 and I was underwhelmed. It actually had worse local dimming, viewing angle then KS8500 and it just didnt perform better with HDR. Returned that and got the 900E and it's a much better TV. HDR is much brighter and colors are more noticeable. Black Uniformity and Local Dimming is much better and overall much better experience other than the OS which is very crappy on Sony TVs anyway but I got the Roku and AppleTV. Only other issues for 900E would be antiglare but I have it in a dark room and also only HDMI2 and HDMI3 are capable of 4:4:4 pulldown

Is there a reason that you went with the 900e instead of the 930e?

I can't speak for Marcin, but I went with the 900e because the 65" was $500 cheaper. I thought about getting the 930e, but by getting the 900e, I had money left over for a new receiver, a 4K UHD BD player, and some new cables.
