Default Asian Horror On Blu-ray

A Thread for Asian Horror on Blu-Ray.

JAPANESE HORROR:

THE RING FRANCHISE:

Notes: Arrow's Ringu Collection includes RING (1998), RASEN (a.k.a. SPIRAL), RING 2, and RING 0: BIRTHDAY. Ring: The Final Chapter and Sadako (2019) do not have English subtitles. The Ring Two also have Blu-Ray releases in Europe but only of the Theatrical Cut, the Japanese release is the unrated cut. Sadako 3D has a US release but it's OOP.

THE GRUDGE FRANCHISE:

Notes: Arrow's Ju-On collection includes The Curse/2, The Grudge 2, White Ghost, and Black Ghost.

KOREAN HORROR:

CHINESE HORROR:

THAI HORROR:

INDONESIAN HORROR:

FILIPINO HORROR:

This boxset contains multiple Asian horrors from all over:

Quote:
IO ISLAND (KIM KI-YOUNG, SOUTH KOREA, 1977)
SCALES (SHAHAD AMEEN, SAUDI ARABIA, 2019)
BAKENEKO: A VENGEFUL SPIRIT (YOSHIHIRO ISHIKAWA, JAPAN, 1968)
NANG NAK (NONZEE NIMIBUTR, THAILAND, 1999)
SUNDELBOLONG (SISWORO GAUTAMA PUTRA, INDONESIA, 1981)
NON-ENGLISH FRIENDLY RELEAES:

US REMAKES:

Suggestions are appreciated.

Great idea for a thread. Off to a good start.

Do consider changing it to Asian Horror on Blu-ray and include Chinese, Hong Kong,
Korean, and Philippine titles in addition to Japan.

Soon I'll be using this thread for my shopping list.

Nice, I bought most of those region A releases this year already. Just added Kuroneko to my Criterion wishlist for the next sale. Thanks!

Wish Ju-on and those Sadeko spin offs would get a US release. I'd like to see the Tomie films too after reading the manga last year.

Shakespeare's MCBETH has long been considered his only horror play. It has witches,
curses, evil spells, madness, visions, gory knife murders, a protagonist who can't die
momentarily. Kurosawa's THRONE OF BLOOD is a faithful adaptation in deference to
Japanese culture and trappings.

You gotta add all the Shinya Tsukamoto classics like Tetsuo: The Iron Man, A Snake of June, Haze. Pretty much all compiled in Arrows Solid Nightmares Collection. Also Tsukamoto's Gemini which was released by Mondo Macabro.

Also I second that this should be a thread of all Asian Horror Cinema on Blu-ray. Otherwise, it'd be all the same other films already posted in another Japanese film thread people already use.

I like the inclusion of Blu-rays from other regions or might as well just look at the OP in the Japanese films thread. I also wouldn't mind seeing this become an Asian horror thread. Korean horror might be worthy of having its own thread if this just stays as Japanese horror.

The original versions of The Grudge films (both DTV and theatrical) have surprisingly yet to make it to BD. Are the US rights still with Lionsgate?

No disrespect intended, but please DON'T add animation. Please don't. There are too many.
Someone start a separate thread for Japanese animation.

Yea if we start adding anime titles this will get clogged up really quickly. I also agree that it shouldn’t just be J-horror but Asian horror in general.

I'm sttill hoping for "Ju-On" on BD for the US market. I don't consider "The Grudge" an Asian movie. It's an American move by an Asian director.

It’s listed under U.S. remakes.

The OP could get clogged up regardless. I suppose a reason nobody wanted to make a thread on this topic is due to what even defines J-Horror. You could throw a lot of titles under the genre.
I'm not the OP but am just making a suggestion - maybe leave the first post with a list of the top-notch J-Horror titles (the ones most people ask about) much like it is now and then fellow members can post their favorite (or ones they just want to make aware) J-Horror/Asian Horror films on Blu-ray.

I agree when people think J-Horror, they think Ju-On or The Ring but then it becomes more broader than that.

I think a great example would be Takashi Miike's Ichi the Killer. Some view that as a horror movie cause of the sheer amount of violence, blood and some uncomfortable scenes that could scare the crap out of someone, but also that's just Yakuza being extremely Yakuza. Is it a Horror film or a Yakuza Crime film? Also it has it's funny moments too.

Sort of the same thing with Ryuhei Kitamura's Versus.

I love Ichi the Killer but I wouldn't call it a horror film. Even though
[Show spoiler]the face sliding down the wall
was pretty horrific....

While most tokusatsu would fall more specifically under science fiction, the Garo franchise is a fun blend of henshin hero and J-horror elements. Only the first few shows/movies have been released in the US from Kraken Releasing, along with the animated spinoffs from Funimation.

Kraken also released this more-silly-than-scary zombie film.
