Brideshead Revisited Blu-ray

Brideshead Revisited Blu-ray Review

Why was this not released in the US in Blu-ray?

Does anyone know when the Blu-ray BD will be available?

There are no current plans to release this on BD in the US... There is a UK version coming out January 26...

Up for preorder now, but I cant imagine it being worth an upgrade, given the poor quality of the original source, although I hope I'm wrong!

Default What a difference a few hours makes!

I pre-ordered this earlier today on Amazon for $48.99 but now I see that it has gone up to $62.99! Incredible.

I can only hope the picture quality is a big upgrade from the DVD. Who wouldn't want to see the inside of Castle Howard in pristine HD?

Received my copy today - locked to Region A I'm afraid in case anyone was looking to import. The picture quality looks pretty good to my untrained eye. Probably worth noting that the back cover states it is in 1080i.

It's a substantial upgrade from the DVD?

I'm unhappy it's not 1080p, too, but the only 1080i blu that I have, the Chicago/EWF concert at the Greek, looks pretty good to me, so I wouldn't complain of that only.

I had been hoping that BR would have gotten the same treatment that Pride and Prejudice did to make it 1.78 :1. I love OAR, but that would have made it seem even more grand. I see that it will be in 1.33.

It's certainly a substantial upgrade from my very old, unremastered DVD. The picture is much clearer and sharper. Whether it is a worthy upgrade from the more recent remastered DVD I don't know. One thing I did notice - the colours all seem very pale and washed out, more so than I remember them. I suppose this may be an accurate reflection of the original look though. And yes, the aspect ratio is 4:3 full screen.

I live in the U.K. and have the 30th anniversary remastered dvd which looks and sounds wonderful. What score would you give the picture and sound for the Blu-ray?

3.5/5 for picture. It's relatively clear and sharp but looks a little washed out. I also think faces look a bit waxy (DNR?) but it didn't overly affect my viewing. In episode 1 during the scene where Sebastian and Charles visit the nanny at Brideshead the whole scene seems to be swimming in grain, not sure why, perhaps the way it was filmed?

I'm not the best person to judge audio as my setup is not great but I detected no hiss and thought things generally sounded very clear.

3.5/5. I would probably cancel my order and wait for more reviews if it weren't for the fact that I pre-ordered mine at such a reasonable price and almost automatically it shot up in price.

I just really want to see great video of the interiors of Brideshead and Marchmain House and Venice in addition to the wonderful storyline and music.

Brideshead was shot on 16mm so it will look grainier & softer than normal and also the film negative was in a poor state before restoration. My Acorn Media DVD had some bad digital artifacts (particularly bad interlacing) from someone who didn't know how to master a DVD.

Hopefully this Blu-ray will preserve as much of the original negatives with no digital artifacts. Although the comment "faces look a bit waxy" doesn't look promising. Really looking forward to this though but I'm going to have to try and rent it first as I don't trust Acorn after their DVD.

Default Very washed out

I'm pretty disappointed in the picture quality of the new "Brideshead" Blu-ray. The picture is crystal clear, and the sound is good, but the color... As a previous poster wrote, it's quite washed out. Is this the intended look? I sold my DVD set when the Blu-ray was announced, but I don't remember the DVDs looking like this. I can turn up the color intensity, but that makes the image look artificial--and there are some darker scenes in which the color IS intense enough, so turning up the intensity makes those worse. I was hoping for something close to that wonderful restored version of "Pride and Prejudice" on Blu-ray, which made 16mm look like a million bucks. I think somebody dropped the ball on this remastering.

There's a rather disheartening review and screen shots here:

Whilst I strongly disagree with his assessment of the series (Edwardian soap opera?!), I'm in broad agreement with his remarks on the blu-ray package.

Sounds like a bad Blu-ray transfer.

If you're not put off by that and are still considering a buy based on fond memories, consider this: A recent viewing of the DVD set dispelled any nostalgia for me, and surprisingly, I no longer found "Brideshead Revisited" very enjoyable -- unlike "Pride and Prejudice," which totally holds up.

I'm curious, has anyone seen (or seen any reviews of) the Spanish release of this?:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Bride...Blu-ray/60198/

It says on the front at the top (in Spanish) "Restored from the original negative" which makes me think it might be a different/superior transfer? (Most reviews of the US release said it was from a broadcast print rather than the negative).

Found it a few places online but no reviews at all!

I have it. It's exactly the same transfer, which was licensed from ITV Studios.
