Default 7.1 Speakers with a 5.1 Source

I have an Onkyo 705 7.1 Receiver. I've ordered a 6th and 7th speaker for my home theater. I was just curious if anyone knows if the 6th and 7th will automatically mux the sound from the other speakers (or maybe the rear), or won't play anything at all. Does anyone know if there's a setting that should be enabled to make use of those speakers (preferably to have them play what's coming out of the 4th and 5th speaker)?

Thanks!

to matrix bitstream 5.1 into 7.1 you will most likely be using prologicIIx of some sort, or one of THX modes...yes youre receiver will do this. Not sure if it can post process PCM signals (LPCM). perhaps others on here who own the 705 know?

On the Yamaha models you can. With all 5.1 signals you can use Dolby EX, Dolby Pro-Logic IIx and also THX with them (THX Surround EX and THX Cinema with Pro-Logic IIx enabled). There's also THX Select2 Cinema which will put ambient sounds in the rear channels which is pretty awesome. It really helps fill the room and the gap between the 2 side speakers. But I am not sure if the reciever you're talking about is even certified. So really, if you enable EX or Pro-Logic IIx, you'll take a 5.1 source and extract the 2 extra channels from that. It wont be discrete but you should still be able to tell the difference.

Thanks! My receiver is THX Certified, so hopefully it will work out well.
