[Show spoiler]Sony is prepping a 40th anniversary UHD release of Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Barring any delays and/or reschedulings, it should be released on September 19, 2017, according to the Sony's press site.

With all that grain, it'd want to be a BD-100 or it will be an encoding disaster.

Have Sony even used a triple layer disc yet?

And this is why I stopped myself from buying the 30th Anniversary (ow...) disc. It was tempting considering how low you can find it but I was hoping for a UHD for the 40th.

Are you serious? the 30th Anniversary Blu-Ray has been out for like 10 years. It's a solid release and has everything you could want if you like the film.

If that BD edition came out maybe in 2014/5 then sure, i'd buy that you passed on it because you were waiting on the 4K, but saying that now... nup.

Well I didn't have a BD player until 2012 and I didn't the film until late into 2014. I saw it in a bargain for $7 at a Walmart a few months back and by that point, I knew a UHD was probably gonna happen so I didn't buy it. Yeah if I had seen this film back then I would've gotten it. Context, I guess.

Yeah... it's why I brought it up. Studios often love to release war related films around Father's Day, Memorial Day, or Veteran's Day. If the Sony Press Site had some listings out to September, I wondered if it would be on there.

Not yet.

Lawrence of Arabia is also celebrating its anniversary this year, and there isn't any UHD listing for that one either.

I suspect it's because they are still in the works and there's no firm release date yet.
