If the movie is in a 2:35:1 aspect ratio, you will still see the black bars even on a 16x9 widescreen tv.
A possible way around this is to play the movie through the component cables (not the HDMI) and use the zoom function on your 16X9 tv. This will make the image take up the whole screen, but you will actually be losing some of the picture on the sides. Some people don't mind that.
