Tim Ritter's SOV horror classic Truth or Dare series is getting a boxset from SRS films. If it hits 200 preorders by Oct first, one week away, it will be on pressed blu-ray discs. Please help! They are over half way there already!

Originally released in 1986, Truth or Dare: A Critical Madness has become a cult horror classic. This low-budget film, shot on 16mm, still resonates with fans of 1980s horror. The movie gained renewed attention when Elijah Wood expressed his love for it, calling it his all-time favorite horror movie—a film he frequently screens during PR appearances at packed theaters worldwide. Last year, the film received the ultimate B-movie tribute when it was featured by the team at RiffTrax, much to the delight of its dedicated fan base. Truth or Dare remains one of the first "direct to video" movies and a prime example of the "video nasty" era, where independent filmmakers pushed boundaries with shocking content. The film's legacy lies in its influence on the slasher and exploitation genres, showcasing how independent horror can make a lasting impact despite its modest means.

Truth or Dare spawned four sequels, including two directed by Tim Ritter, Wicked Games and Screaming for Sanity, one co-created by Ritter and fans, Deadly Dares, and a finale from uber-fan Scott Tepperman, I Dared You. I really wish anyone who even thinks about upscaling shot on video movies takes a look at the Scream Queen Hot Tub Party blu-ray. Upscaling video like this looks terrible. Do what JR Bookwalter does and don't upscale. Leave the video as it is (maybe a little bit of touch up) and let the player do the upscaling. Fans of shot-on-video movies do not want these things upscaled. They want them to look how they are supposed to look. Upscaling is going to ruin this set.

No wonder they want $90 for it.

It’s pretty telling to me that this is supposedly shipping and SRS hasn’t shown one photo of the packaging, artwork, or “AI restoration.”

I’m keeping my expectations extremely low. Might buy later if it’s not an absolute dumpster fire of a release.

My copy is in the house. I’m not a screenshot boy nor do I have any previous editions for comparison but I’ll throw the first one on in a bit to see if I see anything ****y.

OK I started this a little later than I thought. There’s an original transfer option on the main menu in 1080i. The AI-enhanced version is presented as the main program and its 1080p. I literally just started it.

I didn’t see anything too offensive AI-wise but there are 2 or 3 spots at least where you can see it struggling to reconcile text in the background.

Having said that, it still looks terrible and it seems like a huge waste of time and money. But at least the previous transfer is included.

Edit: I just popped in the other two discs (it’s a 3-disc set, disc 1 is the original, discs 2&3 are 2/3 and 4/5 double features) and the “original transfer” option is only present for the first film, though it’s unclear from the Facebook posts if AI was applied to only the first one or others as well.
