Default 7.1 speaker placement question...

Im hooking up a Yamaha 7.1 receiver for a buddy tomorrow. He is only using 5.1 on it. He asked me if a pair of speakers he has in the upstairs hallway can be hooked into this and used as background music when not using the 5.1. Is that possible? Thanks in advance.

If I understand your question correctly, he wants his movies to play via one set of speakers (5.1), and to play stereo through another pair of speakers? The definitive answer is maybe. Depends on the receiver, but most medium to high end receivers can have different zones.

I have an old (but much loved) Yamaha RX-V3900 which works in that your "presence" speakers can be allocated to Zone 2/3, limiting you to 5.1, or alternatively has a dedicated output for Zone 2/3.

What model are you hooking up, and if you can post a pic of the back panel that should tell us if it'll do it.

See https://www.manualslib.com/manual/11...age=122#manual for an idea of what I mean.

Not sure which model exactly. I'll see it tomorrow. But you are exactly right on the ZONE thing. I will just hook his upstairs pair of speakers on ZONE 2. Thanks for the reply and sorry for not explaining more clearly.

If the receiver is equipped with a muli-zone feature (which all modern receivers have), then yes it's possible.
