Default LG UP870 $99 at WalMart. Has anyone tried it?

Hello all,

I see that the LG UP970 has a dedicated thread, and seems to be an extremely popular player on this forum.

However, I was at Wal-Mart a couple days ago and saw the LG UP870 on sale there for a mere $99. I came home and used my Google-fu, to see what I could find out about this player, but information online seems rather scant at the moment.

Has anyone here tried this player?

If so, would you consider it to be a decent way to jump into 4k?

I am 100% aware that a budget player will not have any bells and whistles, nor will it perform like an Oppo, or other reference quality player, but I am just getting started with 4k and want to dive in at price points as low as possible.

The main reason for this is merely because I have extremely limited funds, and I simply cannot afford much. Being that's the case, the 4k t.v. I end up with will (most likely) also be a budget model (Vizio, TCL, etc).

Secondly, after learning a bit about the various HDR and dynamic HDR formats, I discovered that they must all have HDR10 as a base layer, so I am not overly concerned about having Dolby Vision, Technicolor, HDR10+, etc right now.

Sure, I won't have the latest and greatest whiz bang features, but I don't want that to stop me from enjoying 4k and supporting the format. I already picked up a handful of discs on BF, so I figure my next logical step is to get a player for them. After that, I plan to get a 4k t.v. I'm still using an old 720p Samsung plasma at the moment, but it still works great, and I am guessing that some of the new 4k remasters will still look better than some lower quality standard BD transfers (Blade Runner, for example).

Anyway, enough rambling...LOL!

What are your expert opinions on the low cost LG UP870?

EDIT: Link to official LG page for it.
