Watching iTunes extras offline

So I only came to know after purchasing a few movies from iTunes that I cannot view them offline. This was frustrating especially when I was all set to listen the audio commentaries when I was traveling. Do you guys know why they have this policy ? Also, is this true for other services like Vudu?

At one time iTunes extras could be downloaded as a file separate from the feature itself. This changed some time ago (not sure how long, but certainly over a year and perhaps two). Uncertain as to their reasoning.

VUDU doesn’t let you download extras either. Amazon tacks it on at the end of the movie, like they used to do on VHS tapes, so extras do get downloaded with your movie on Amazon.

The old format (ITE folders) was not well-suited for streaming (back then you could only watch the extras on a computer). The new format is streaming-friendly and you can watch it on the Apple TV or an iOS device. They started switching over in 2014.
