USA The Year of Living Dangerously (1982)

I wanted to start a thread for this film.

I picked up the Warner Archive Collection DVD recently as I wait with bated breath for a blu-ray release... one day.

For anyone interested here some info on the DVD that I've also updated in the listing. The quality is quite good. Equal to what's available on streaming.

Format: DVD-R 4.41GB

Aspect ratio: 2.35 anamorphic (NOT 2.39 as stated on bluray.com)

Languages:
English Mono
French Mono
Spanish Mono

Subtitles:
English
French
Spanish
English SDH

Bonus: Theatrical Trailer

I actually checked out the DVD from the public library several years ago. I really enjoyed the movie. I've been waiting for a blu-ray release ever since.

As much as I adore this shamefully underappreciated film, this thread should go in the WISH LIST section.

Damn, I thought it had finally been announced.

OP's been here since 2009 but seems to be unaware of the Wish List section.

Thought with Gallopoli coming out, it was going to be the Year of Weir in 2023. Got me excited for a moment.

Witness also deserves a re-release loaded with special features.

Surprised it's not a Paramount Presents or on 4K yet.

Still waiting on The Mosquito Coast too (could cash in on the Apple series)

Ugh, my hopes were raised! It is still so mystifying why this absolutely wonderful movie has not yet been released. Whereas a similar (but one would think hardly more marketable) film from this era - UNDER FIRE - has already been released twice by two different companies!

I sure hope Warner Archive will get around to this and do it right. The aspect ratio - last time I checked - on Itunes was incorrect. It is correct on HBO Max, but the master looks dated.

Peter Weir received an honorary Academy Award a couple of weeks ago here in LA. Maybe that energy will spur WB to release his films on blu.

Here’s a link to his speech highlights, with many of his cast and crew in attendance:

I feel so fortunate to have met him while I was still in college those many years ago. He was the best storyteller, and "listener" I've ever met. He was patient as my naive, very nervous, younger self rambled on. Now, having directed a few hundred commercials, a couple of music videos, and a handful of short films later, I'm still reminded of his advice to me. He was a true inspiration.

Perhaps it has to do with some issue with restoration. Given the pedigree of the film, one would think that Warner would make it a priority.

I really really hope WAC releases it for November, or December it doesn't matter to me as it's such a great Australian film from Peter Weir we already got Witness from Arrow Video, which I still plan on buying this year now let's get The Year of Living Dangerously WAC are you listening? If not with WAC it's probably with Criterion most likely, but I'll take a Criterion Blu-Ray, or a WAC Blu-Ray of the film I just want it released so bad.

This is one of my favorite early 80s films of all time.

Peter Weir + eternity plus a day for a Blu-ray release = Criterion has this.

The eternal wait is the dead giveaway. Happened with After Hours, Freaks, Pat Garrett, and the two Lewtons. Pretty sure it's happening with Captain Blood too.

If a new transfer exists for The Year Of Living Dangerously, the same thing could be happening there too.

For now, check out the snapper from WHV (same content as the WAC disc but it's pressed instead of burned). There's also allegedly a MGM DVD release but I haven't seen it.

There's also a Blu-ray out in Spain...but we all know what that means. No guarantees there.

Amazon Prime currently has this in its 2.35 aspect ratio. Only time I've seen a non-cropped version other than showings on TCM.

Please let 2025 be the year we finally get this title I really really hope that this year is when we finally get this title on Blu-Ray. It's also one of my favorite Mel Gibson movies I'm absolutely shocked this still hasn't gotten a Blu-Ray yet.

Yep, I own it, it came out in 1997:

I suspect it's the same transfer as the 2000 Warner DVD, which I suspect is also the same transfer as the 2014 WAC DVD, though I've never been willing to spend the money to find out, because I live in hope of a Blu-Ray...

Yikes!

It's free now, so I just checked it out.

It's very obviously upscaled to HD from the ancient 1990s standard def DVD master, it's an unwatchable pixelfest of jagged edges.

I'm astounded that Warners has been sitting on this title for so long.

That's awful Warner definitely needs to get on putting out this title on Blu-Ray with either WAC, or Criterion immediately. It needs a restoration badly so hopefully this year is the big year for this film.
