I gotta be candid.

I watched this for the first time last week because it was on Amazon Prime, and I just did not find this anime film enjoyable at all - even for a Satoshi Kon film...

Kudos to those who want to own it on Blu Ray though.

I liked it, but not as much as other Kon works.

Still might pick it up if the price is right.

Did anyone see this in the recent theatrical showing? Do we know anything about the master used?

If it's the same master as the Japanese BD, there are a few digitally composited shots that were printed back to film. Doesn't look as bad as, say, Memories, 'cause it was the next generation of digital film-out technology, but it does look a little weird (colors aren't QUITE aligned, etc.). The early CG shot of the space station opening up is like this.

What was shown in theaters sure wasn't the JP BD master. Colour grading was different in some scenes, and there was DNR applied, though what grain did remain was frozen like Lupin III Part I on BD in Japan. It looked similar to what was done with Ghost in the Shell '95 and the Gundam remasters.

Thanks for pointing the way. It makes for better discussion if information like this is included or referenced in the thread.

Don't count on it... I'd love to see it re-released though. Took forever to have Satoshi Kon's "Perfect Blue" to get a re-release, who knows what'll have to happen to get "Tokyo Godfathers" and "Paranoia Agent" to see the light of day again...

Tokyo Godfathers has been released multiple times on Blu-ray, including English friendly options in Australia and the United Kingdom.

I'm not trying to be difficult or start an argument, but you seem to just be posting pessimistic speculation about how things will "probably" never get released in the US without much basis.

As you've said "who knows". There's no definite, or hinted, answer one way or another as to who has what rights for distribution for some of these things, and a lot of random titles that people assumed would never get licensed and released in the US have been, while other things that seem like they would for sure come out have nothing at the moment.

Well said. If anyone wants Tokyo Godfathers, the Australian release is Region A so there's really no excuse if you want the film. As for Paranoia Agent, that is a title that has been in licensing Hell for far too long. While I won't speculate as to what legal loophole has been keeping it OOP, I will say that I would love to see a company like Discotek or Nozomi pick up the rights for its distribution. Or anyone really (except Funimation of course).

Is the transfer for Tokyo Godfathers any good?

Kon films haven't exactly always received the best treatment on BD

It's alright. It's the same as the Japanese release, meaning it's still windowboxed like many early Japanese Blu-ray releases. Certainly watchable, but I'd recommend the Manga (UK) release which eliminates the windowbox and has better audio (although it's region B locked).

Amazon and Shout Factory are showing that the BD has been delayed to December 10th.
