Default Do you need to have sequels in matching formats?

If you already owned Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes on blu-ray, did you buy War on blu-ray instead of 4k so it would match? Or maybe you upgraded all of them to 4k?

Did you buy Guardians 2 on blu-ray because Guardians 1 isn’t available on 4k? Or did you buy it on 4k hoping for a catalog release of the first?

Will you only buy 10 Cloverfield Lane on 4k and be alright with it not ‘format matching’ the first one? Or will you buy both, knowing that the new one coming out this year will be released in 4k and then they can all match?

These are the questions that keep me up at night, and I’m interested in how everyone else collects their movies. Or maybe I’m just way too OCD about how I collect mine.

I would buy the newest one in 4k even if they don't match and wait for a sale on the previous ones in 4k (since I also like them to match and hopefully they were also worth the upgrade).

I believe I have bought 4k every time as long as it's available. I'm starting to wonder about 4k animations as I can't see any improvement though. Some 4k animation discs look a little more dull and don't "pop" like I thought animations should. Many probably disagree with me on this though.

Doesn't bother me. I have John Wick in Blu ray and the sequel in UHD. I also have Jack Reacher in Blu ray and the sequel in UHD. I have my UHDs mixed in with the regular Blu rays since they are the same size and makes it easier to find. I've only upgraded one Blu ray to UHD and I'm kind of sticking to the policy of not double dipping.

It kind of bugs me with stuff like Michael Bay's TMNT movies to only have the second on UHD... or yeah, GotG 1 and the other X-Men movies.

But it's not the end of the world, and I won't decline to buy a set of movies or not buy UHD etc to keep things symmetrical. Plus, you'll get the BD in the UHD anyway.

If this happens with Episode VIII, it's probably going to tick everyone off.

See I have, but I’ve also upgraded some (John Wick) because I needed them to match the sequel. I also chose not to buy Guardians 2 on 4k because there’s a chance Guardians 1 will never be released on 4k.

I have X-Men Origins: Wolverine on DVD, The Wolverine on 3D Blu-ray, and Logan on UHD. It was a coincidence, but I like it because it reflects the quality of each movie.

Yeah, for me it varies. On Black Friday when I bough Divergent and Insurgent in 4K, as they were $10 each, I picked up Allegiant on Blu because it was half the price and I knew I really only wanted it to complete the series and I didn't care too much about 4K as it got horrific reviews. But for films like the Despicable Me films where I owned 1 and 2 in 4K I purchased the 3rd in 4K because for only about $5 more it goes with the rest of the films I knew would get more playtime in my house. Basically, if I know I'll watch it again and again I'd spend the extra $5 for 4K, for example when I purchased IT because I knew for $5 more I'd watch the 4K more times over the next few years.
Except, for example, I own every other main stream Nolan film on blu ray so I got Dunkirk on blu ray (because a local pawn shop owner in my area gave me a copy for free of it because he had three in store and was raving I needed to see it) because I had a feeling I wouldn't watch it over and over and over and really wanted it to match the other Nolans I had for over the years so I didn't care that it was blu ray as it was both free and the last Nolan film I needed. But for films like Blade Runner 2049 I'd go 4K because I own the original in 4K and I was stunned by that so I'd rather throw in an extra $5 knowing I can expect excellent quality.

(SORRY THIS WAS SO LONG, I HAD A LOT TO SAY... )

Sometimes.

Upgraded Mummy 1 and 2. Wanted to pick up 3 but didn't own it already. Got it on UHD because that's what the other two were.

Apes Trilogy? First one on BD. Second on is 3D. Third...I own both the 3D and the UHD.

Reasong: Second film is native 3D.. so meant to be seen in 3D. First film I considered UHD upgrade but the audio track is still 5.1 DTS or Dolby, one of those two....and it would be an upscale. Third film I bought 3D (not native) and UHD for the Amos audio track.

I would do the upgrade in that situation too.

Also, man, GotG2 is a real treat in HDR. Don't deny yourself

This just highlights that we need GotG1 on UHD tbh.

I have sold several BDs and replaced them with UHD/BD combos. There are some exceptions though. For example, I won't replace the first three Bourne films because of the old masters used or Terminator 2 because of the heavy DNR used.

What if you *shock* never bought Cloverfield, (aka Asshats The Movie), on any format, but plan on buying 10 Cloverfield Lane on UHD? I don't buy movies I don't like, just to complete franchises. I own MIB and MIB 3. I will never own MIB 2.

It doesn't bother me that much. I have Prometheus in 4K but I am perfectly content with watching Alien and Aliens on regular Blu-Ray.

Yep. I had the first two Planet of the Apes on Blu-ray, and I got War of the Planet of the Apes on Blu-ray as well on Black Friday - even though I could have got the UHD for not much more. It would have been too weird to have them mismatched.

Same with the Hunger Games movies - had the first two on Blu-ray, and even though the UHD's were going cheap at Best Buy, I bought the final two on standard Blu-ray, just to keep them the same.

If Hunger Games was some franchise I really liked, then I would have either bought the first two on UHD in the first place, or I'd double dip the first two on UHD so they were all the same

I always buy in the highest quality available, so I wouldn't buy a regular Blu when a 4K is available. But I do like the general packaging to match. For example, I bought the regular 4K edition of Blade Runner 2049 instead of the steelbook in order to match my 4K of the original Blade Runner.

Absolutely.

As for sequels. I can't stand not having the fist Jack Reacher on UHD for example. Also goes for the Underworld and Resident Evil franchises as both have not been released on UHD in their entirety.

Well you know the deal with me and MIB 3 and I still own it.

So you don't like MIB 2, you don't like both Tomb Raider movies and now you're saying you don't like Cloverfield (which I consider the best found footage movie out there as well as one of my favorite movies ever)?

I think our taste in movies couldn't be further apart.

If so then Origins should be on VCD

I agree about being content.... but if possible I would prefer a film series to be in the same format. Yes, that’s pretty nerdy, OCD, whatever ya want to call it. For those that are into 3D, I’d much prefer all films in the series to be in 3D. Like my Hobbit set or the wizard of Oz films.

It won’t always be possible though and we'll just have to do the best we can.

Somewhat. And I have another layer of collection disorder. I must have both 3D and 4K versions of movies in a series.

MCU, Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Wars are going through this right now.
