Recently re-watched the Mike Hodges/Clive Owen film I'll Sleep When I'm Dead. This movie is both extremely disturbing & very well-done. I would definitely consider this a neo-noir. Very understated film. I liked how the urban environment of the city contrasted to the rural wooded countryside where the CO character had lived for years; I got the impression that the idea here was that the city corrupted people to some extent, and to get away from the corruption the CO character had to leave. When he came back to the city, he ended up being drawn back into the violence & death (much of it not of his doing) that he had tried to escape from.
Also, the tale of a man who had somewhat dropped out of society for years & came back to avenge his brother's death was both tragic & interesting. This is actually the second Hodges/Owen film; the first was the also excellent Croupier (1998) - which was also a neo-noir. ISWID also bears many intentional similarities to Hodges' Get Carter (1971) - in the storyline, though not so much the visual appearance(s). However, I find ISWID to be the slightly superior film - when compared to both Croupier & Get Carter. Here's hoping the film makes it's way onto Blu one of these days. The DVD is OK, but could definitely use an upgrade. Last edited by AnamorphicWidescreen; 01-15-2018 at 06:32 AM. |
