Default The best year for horror... ever?

Currently 3 of my top 10 favorite films of 2017 are horror, which is really unprecedented for me. There were so many amazing horror films last year. A couple were made earlier but weren't widely released until 2017, so they are still 2017 films. Here are all of the ones I saw from 2017, and honestly nearly every single one of them was at least enjoyable (except the last 3).

1. Better Watch Out 10/10
2. The Devil's Candy 9/10
3. Raw 9/10
4. It Comes at Night 9/10
5. Get Out 8/10

6. mother! 8/10
7. 47 Meters Down 8/10 <--- really underrated. Given the premise, it delivered.
8. Happy Death Day 7/10
9. It 7/10
10. Split 7/10
11. Life 7/10
12. Creep 2 7/10
-----------
13. Annabelle Creation 6/10
14. Killing Ground 6/10
15. Jigsaw 6/10
-----------
16. Gerald's Game 4/10
17. The Babysitter 4/10
18. Leatherface 3/10

I would say the top 5 are absolute masterpieces in the genre... and they all released in the same year. Blows my mind.

I'd also toss in Split and A Cure For Wellness as well.

I don't really consider mother! to be horror, felt more like an existential thriller to me.

Wellness is completely NUTS. You'll be in a gothic treat with that one.

I would say that audience tastes are shifting in general, and horror has been the greatest benefactor of that shift. Horror is the one genre that doesn't have to worry about dumbing down to satisfy a PG-13 rating like some popular films, so it has a lot of freedom to tell a story. IT is a good example of that. The 1991 version is a good television adaptation with appropriate violence. The theatrical isn't bound to standards and practices and took advantage of that to positive ratings. It's like, you don't get the full experience of The Godfather or Scarface watching it for the first time on TNT.

Movies like Get Out and IT are bringing people back to the theaters for horror movies, and I think that's great for the genre.

Taking off nostalgia glasses, I say 2017 wins, based on quality and quantity.

Hounds I didn't like, thought that was 2016 though. Not really sure. Babysitter is included. Tragedy Girls I'm dying to see. I didn't really think of Belko as a horror but that was pretty fun.

get out of here with that nonsense.

for 1982 you had

the thing
poltergeist
tenebre
Friday the 13th part 3
halloween 3
creepshow

let's not forget that at this time, they also did reissues of older movies to watch in theatres and you had drive in stuff as well. and movies played for a long time in the theatre, since there was no home video.

for 78, might not be the quantity but the quality

hallowen
dawn of the dead
jaws 2 (a sequel for a horror movie that was unheard of at that time)
attack of the killer tomatoes
piranha
magic

besides the fact there are more movies made now, thanks to the secondary home video/streaming market that did not exist, along with advances in technology that make it easier to try and produce movies.

I'm sure are more titles I'm missing from these years...

The Devil's Candy was dreadful, one of the worst movies i sat through in 2017.
Better Watch Out wasn't much better either.

I just watched "It Comes at Night" on Amazon Prime the other day. Before and even after seeing it, I had no idea that it was supposed to be a horror movie, until I saw it mentioned in the first post. The movie was decent, and I have no desire to want to see it again. I'm glad other people have mentioned that they liked it, but it wasn't for me.

I like ’78 & ’82 too – but don’t forget about 1987:

Evil Dead II
Hellraiser
Near Dark
The Lost Boys
Angel Heart
Predator
The Hidden
The Believers
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3
Prince of Darkness
The Gate
Bad Taste
Creepshow 2
The Monster Squad

Respectfully though, 2017 was a very good year, as was the one before it.

So Cure For Wellness is a horror film? That's what I get for judging movies by their trailers lol. I'm intrigued now - sounds like an episode of The Twilight Zone. Worth a blind buy?

The other films on the OP's list didn't pique my interest at all last year. I guess I'm a little jaded by art films passing themselves off as horror movies. It's the trend nowadays I suppose.
