HBO Max just added Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman in HD. Looks good

I never thought this would get an HD make over! Have they redone the special effects shots or just upscaled them?

While it'll annoy people for me to bring it up, I hope WB sees a few gravy sales possible by putting it on Blu-ray. I'd buy it again!

Upscaled.

It's very easy to know immediately which shots have been processed with f/x or other optical work because they look like a DVD while everything else looks like blu-ray.

Cain is kind of a dick these days but I’d still buy the series if it came out on blu-ray.

The shift from HD to 480p for the VFX shots can be jarring at times, but it's all part of the charm as a product of its time.

I’m rewatching The X-Files BDs at the moment and the switch between VFX and non-VFX shots is easily noticeable and jarring there too. Not to the point of ruining the viewing though so I’d imagine L&C will be the same.

There are times when those shots don't even look like 480p, more like ~240 or whatever lines of resolution VHS offered....

Is the HBO Max version 4:3? I guess it must be if they are using upscaled footage, unless they've made a Babylon 5 DVD type of mess.

I had a hard time watching Lois & Clark when it was first broadcast, I couldn't stand how weird the optical effects looked. Even on a standard definition, 20" set, they just seemed bad. My memory is that the flying sequences somehow looked like Superman was photographed anamorphically, but then improperly unsqueezed when layered over the background plates. But Terri Hatcher in Hi-Def--I'll be checking out the HBOMax stream for sure!

If they're willing to do an HD makeover for a 4-season show, it gives me hope that the one-season wonder, The Flash, could get a similar treatment; maybe to tie in with the upcoming movie. It would have the same problem of the SFX sequences looking ass-tastic, but I'd take it.

Probably a longer shot would be Brisco County, not being part of a superhero franchise. But I will dare to dream...

I loved the show when it first came out, but with all the changes they made between season 1 and 2... just wasn't the same. I missed Kat, and did not like Jimmy being recast. Much preferred Landes.

I got the series on dvd, but after my most recent watch through, I decided to get rid of 2-4 and just keep the first season.

I enjoyed the character of Cat Grant in the comics, but screen debut was less than stellar. In the comics, she comes across as actual competition for Lois who is genuinely interested in Clark. On the show, she comes across as a floozy. I kinda agree on Jimmy as well. Landes' portrayal seemed more in line with the character where as his replacement could have just been 'anybody' (not necessarily Jimmy). Still, I would love to have this on blu-ray along with any other Superman related shows that are not.

John Shea was the biggest loss for me. A Superman show with no Lex Luthor, a great one at that, just….no.

The show, especially the first season, is pretty solid. Honestly, the worst thing about it is Cain. Even when I was younger, I just never believed him as Superman, especially coming off Christopher Reeve. Hell, Gerard Christopher felt more like Superman in the Superboy show. The supporting cast is mostly excellent, especially Lane Smith and John Shea.

Nice to see it get an HD upgrade. I have the DVD's, but wouldn't be opposed to a BD series set.

Agreed Season One is by far the best. Seasons 2 & 3 are much cheesier and silly, but I can still enjoy them. Season 4 took another step down, but I do wish the show had gotten a fifth season and/or a proper ending.

Cain and Hatcher both wanted to do a reunion show/movie a while ago But seems like Dean Cain has become too political now for that to go over well.

I think I dropped the show sometime in the third season. I think the first season is great and season 2 was ok. I’d still buy a complete series set though.

I may be against popular opinion here, but Season 4 is one of the strongest seasons for me. Many of my favourite episodes are there, the last few minutes of Meet John Doe leading to the cliffhanger are excellent, and the three parter with Troll / Leslie Luckabee is a great arc. Much better than the amnesia nonsense in Season 3 just to prolong the wedding for as long as possible...
