United Kingdom Orchard End Murder / The Showman

Screened this tonight. Orchard End Murder is one of the sickest and strangest things I've ever seen. It's a cross between In Cold Blood and Little Red Riding Hood. The Showman is a lot of fun too. It's hard to believe stuff like this is ending up on blu-ray. The quality is serviceable. Great video transfer, but the source elements are a little beat up. I'm sure it can't look any better. If you enjoy the strange 70s stuff coming out on the small labels, you'll like this. I'm not going to say too much about the films, because it would ruin them.

This was one of my favourite blu ray releases of 2017. I love stumbling upon these strange little curios that get plucked from obscurity.

Both films look great and the subject matter in both is very interesting.

This would make a good double feature with Whoever Slew Auntie Roo. It has the same sort of fairy tale mixed with extreme violence feel. "Once upon a time a beautiful girl with very nice breasts stumbled into a cottage in an orchard where a hunchback and a giant lived..."

Some nicely odd moments in this film. My favourite being the scene with
[Show spoiler]the murder victim's bare arse sticking out of the too shallow grave
which is in itself a strange thing to shoot but the sight of
[Show spoiler]the middle aged male extra dressed as police detective gently brushing dirt off her buttocks as if he's about to brush them for fingerprints
for some reason cracked me up the first time I watched the blu-ray.

(Not really plot spoilers but I don't want to spoil it for anyone)

Yeah, this was an enjoyable 50 or so minutes. An entertaining and moderately nasty horror short. Shame I found The Showman a little problematic.

Either way, after 2016's Expresso Bongo and Psychomania (while it was wonderful to finally see the superior "more songs, less Cliff" original theatrical edit of E.B. on non-bootleg home video, I thought both films a little too mainstream for the Flipside banner) it was nice that with this and Long Shot the Flipside collection seemed to return to it's apparent intended routes.

If you look closely in that scene you will notice a very young Rik Mayall who is uncredited
[Show spoiler] playing one of those policeman
but it's a blink and you'll miss it moment.

I've watched it twice and missed him both times, though I'm not sure I was actually looking the first time.

To be fair I wasn't aware until I was made aware and that was a week after I'd seen it myself.
