I've had my Sony player for years. Until a few month's ago it would play fine.
Then I buy Logan and it won't even load up. The new Power Rangers bluray won't either. Some older titles from the studios will load, but after multiple times loading disc, closing door, not load, open door, reposition disc and do it again. Paramount Blurays load right up, as does Universal. Dvds load up almost instantly. Sony stopped updating it years ago. Is there a known issue or is it my player and time to look for a new one? |

It sounds like the laser is failing in your case, if DVDs are playing fine, try a lens cleaner first, but keep an eye out for a new player. |

I was having a problem like this with my old Panasonic BD605, purchased in 2009.
I buy mostly Buena Vista releases, and newer ones like Mulan and the Miyazaki set wouldn't load while older discs were perfectly fine. Mulan played in my PC, and I later had trouble with an older disc that I had played tons of times. I bought a replacement Panasonic player, and my troubled discs all played, even Logan and Logan Noir. The older one still plays some movies, so I've kept it as a back up. But you sadly might want to look into a new player. |

Can you verify it's an actual firmware issue before you go to the trouble, though? I could hear physical evidence of possible failure in my case, because the laser kept ratcheting, but I eventually got one of the trouble discs to play after doing silly things like rubbing the disc on the carpet (yeah, I don't know but it worked), blowing dust off the unit, cooling it down, etc.

Firmware is the most likely problem and easiest to fix. Just see if there is an update, install it. If it works, great. If it doesn't, then you can worry about physical issues.

It's a BDPS3100.
According to their website the last update was December 2014. When I put in a bluray disc that won't load I put my hand on the player and I can feel the motor running as if it's searching. When I push the open button, the disc is in a different orientation than when I put it in it. I was looking at their BDPS 3700 or 6700. Which according to their site had firmware updates of 5/2017. Are either of those good players? |

All the Sony Blu-ray players in the last few years are good players. I have seen $50 Sony Blu-ray players that have the same picture and sound quality as a $599 Blu-ray player. The differences in Sony players are things like, WIFI, 3D, 4K upscaling, and native 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc playback.

The Sony BDP-S3100 has both wired Ethernet and WI-FI. Connect the Blu-ray player directly to the Internet to see if there is a 2016 or 2017 firmware update. Sometimes Sony does not update their website for older players, but instead still offers firmware updates if the Blu-ray player is connected to the Internet.

The last firmware update was 9/2015, not too long ago I guess but I'm starting to think the comment about just being obsolete is true. I posted the issue to the Panasonic forum yesterday - if I get a response that sounds like it may be relevant for you too I'll post it here. |

The lasers could be going on these older players. Each company might use the same replication plant for their discs while other companies use different ones that may have different tolerances. A failing laser may have problems with discs from a certain plant.

Thanks, that may be it, at least in my case. No useful response from Panasonic yet, and I'm not really expecting one. Meanwhile, I used this as a reason to upgrade to a 4K unit. Honey, my lasers are old!

The same problem I had with my Oppo-93 . Most Fox blu-rays will not play anymore in the machine. Also "Titanic" and a couple of Twilight Time titles.

Yesterday I bought the Sony 3700 from Meijer. It was on sale for $69.99 and I used a Santa Bucks coupon on it and saved $10 more on it. So got it for $59.99 plus tax. So half off the $119.99 regular price.
Now I just have to hook it up and check these discs out. I tried a test to download the latest update for the player to my phone and it started to download. So that's the way I'll have to get updates is via the USB method since the only internet access I have. here is on my pre-paid phone. |

We have a number of Blu-ray players, but one HT-E6500 (HTIB) set up has an issue playing most Lionsgate DVDs. It's unusual for a DVD firmware issue these days so as many in this thread would assume it was likely a dirty or failing laser which is what I initially thought as well. However, as I started tracking the discs affected it became clear that it's Lionsgate related or at least includes titles from A24/Lionsgate and Amazon Studios/Lionsgate etc.
I need to get a hold of more discs that use the cyclic redundancy check error copy protection to see if it's not just Lionsgate but rather from any studio that used this LOL "copy protection". |
