Default And so it begins....

So I'm at Futureshop yesterday redeeming some gift cards for some Blu.

When I get up to the cashier I asked him when they are going to stop selling HD-DVD. He said it's already in the works, they'll be downsizing their shelves to make more room for Blu over the coming weeks.

No words ever sounded more true in Winnipeg then... GO BLU!!!!

I think that was a more speculative comment. Best Buy who owns futureshop didn't get the info until late friday, their executives would not have thrown down such a quick decision.

I'm pissed that no place in my area rents BDs. Hopefully that will change because I still want to see how the crappy movies turn out.

I think Best Buy was going to head in this direction irrespective of Warner's decision. This doesn't surprise me. I got similar comments from local best buy employees in advance of christmas.

Default Best Buy Probably knew Beforehand

I don't know guys, I think Best Buy might've known that the news was coming out. Because in my latest Best Buy flyer (in Ontario), there are 20 blu rays advertised compared to 1 hd-dvd (Zodiac).

But I'd be weary if some random sales guy from a Futureshop already has insider information on pulling the plug on HD DVD so quickly. I mean, I've had stories from Futureshop employees saying that HD DVD is better. So don't put all your trust in what they say.

We all know it will happen sooner or later though.

Well it's been kinda obvious at this store, I won't name which one I don't want to get that person in trouble.

But everytime I go there I've always missed the bulk of sales. All I see are name plates for movies with very little left in the Blu section. The HD-DVD section is always 90%+ full.

Simple numbers can tell a store what they should be stocking, and how much shelf space they should dedicate to a product. It's simple business practice. But I'm not here to win a pissing match. I just wanted to spread more good blu-news.

SPHE (Sony) has aligned themselves with Rentrak, a video company that shares rental profits between the retail stores and the studio, since July. The way it works is the retail store does not have to pay the entire amount upfront to get BD movies from SPHE. They pay through revenue sharing. Maybe you should mention that to your rental stores, and that you'd be willing to rent BDs from them. IF you don't say anything, they won't know if there's a demand for it.

I was in my local bestbuy yesterday in Scottsdale, AZ and as a HD lurker at this stage, I always look at the people and selection of both formats. I have noticed yesterday without a doubt that they have either extended the Blu section or shrinked the red section. MUCH more of a selection and people were certainly shopping blu. When I went to look at HDMI receivers the guy said make sure you go blu and Red wont be around much longer. I played dumb and said cool, thanks.

Why on earth does Walmart have such a CRAPPY and Small selection of Hi Def movies, period. Makes no sense. Their entertainment section is huge and they stock a ton of stuff, yet very little hd. my observations I guess.

I am holding out hope that Sony announces a price drop of some sort on the ps3 before i get one. I know....wont happen but stranger things have happened.

You're assuming that the decision to curtail HD DVD sales was based solely on Warner's announcement. There have been plenty of hints from our insiders that major retailers have been considering such a move for a while now and Warner's announcement will only reinforce/accelerate such a move. The Bits published an excellent editorial on this eventuality just last week.

I was in Best Buy in Toronto on Sunday and the once even Blu-Ray-HD DVD section was now 75-25 in favour of Blu-Ray.

It... has... begun.

Let's be honest, it doesn't need much consideration.

Within minutes of the announcement, it was obvious HD-DVD was finished, which in addition to already pro Blu-ray sales, was the final nail.
