Default Best Cinemas in London

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here we go!

So it looks like fate was on my side and the stars were aligned.... I will be in London the weekend Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom comes out. The Jurassic Park franchise is my all time favorite, so I'm really excited!

Since I'll be in London, I wanted to ask forum members living in London who regularly go to movies to recommend cinemas... I will most likely see it a few times.

So far, a couple of big recommendations were the BFI IMAX and the Empire cinema.

Any thoughts?

Well I can't give you advice on the best when it comes to modern technology and whatnot, but if you want to experience a little cinematic history and culture you could also check what the BFI Southbank is screening as they might have something interesting playing, and for history check out the Electric Cinema in Notting Hill because that's the UK's second oldest working cinema I think (and the oldest is only older by a couple of months) and it has been stunningly restored.

Thanks Shingster!

Will definitely try to get to the Electric Cinema, especially since it looks like they might be playing Jurassic World FK that weekend!

But if you want to see it in IMAX 3-D, my first choice would be the Empire (now called Cineworld) in Leicester Square, which is the only IMAX with laser projection. Second choice would be the BFI Imax in Waterloo which has a slightly larger screen but no laser, meaning the picture is a bit murkier.

If you want to see it with Atmos (probably with 3D), check if it's playing the Picturehouse Central, which is a very nice, comfortable new cinema with a great bar and food. Consult the website or phone to make sure it's an Atmos screening.

There aren't many Atmos-enabled cinemas in London besides that one. I think only the West End Vue and the "Impact" screen in the aforementioned Cineworld have that capability.

There's also a chance it will be showing in 4DX at the Cineworld or at the multiplex in the Greenwich O2 Centre.

But the Empire/Cineworld in Leicester Square is my cinema of choice for IMAX films, hands down. There are more characterful cinemas in London but you will be compromising on the technical side.

Yep! Empire and BFI are def on my list. Will look into Picturehouse Central. I saw the first JW in the US in an AMC Atmos theatre and I didn't think it warranted the visit... ATMOS is beautiful, but unfortunately, the actual film tracks never replicate the effect of the demo video.

Going to stay clear from 4DX. JW was and will be the only movie I see in 4DX... the seats are so uncomfortable...

A very nice cinema, of course; as is the Curzon Soho. But isn't the whole point that he wants to see JURASSIC WORLD 2? It won't be on there...

Funny enough, it also looks like I will be in London around that time (June 15-21). Seems as if Jurassic World will be out at that time, but Incredibles 2 won't, as a reverse of the American release pattern.

I'll have the first two days to myself so want to see a bunch of things then, though the other ones will mostly be work (and can perhaps see a film or play at night). And yeah, Leiscester Square was the movie theater I was planning on going to.

I remember going to a independent cinema near Marble Arch - that served as a cinema, exhibits and a music venue - can't recall the name, I think it's closed now though, but I thought it was quite a unique concept.

Woohoo. JW comes out a couple of weeks early in the UK, so I'm totally abusing this opportunity. Leicester Square and BFI IMAX are the 2 big ones people are raving out.

Yep. I'm going to the cinema just to see Jurassic World FK. I've already got plans to go see a couple of plays, so I'm limiting my cinema time to just JW.

I am pissed though, because I found out that they're doing the Zimmer VS Williams light show... but all the tickets are sold out I guess you have to have known about it earlier if you wanted tickets.

It's a shame the Odeon in Leicester Square won't have reopened by then as I hear that will have a Dolby Cinema.

The IMAX in Leicester Square is your next best bet. Huge screen and laser projection.

If you want to visit a small independent cinema The Prince Charles is just around the corner. They won't be showing Jurassic World but you might be able to watch something in 35/70mm.

I've got tickets booked for Infinity War at the BFI IMAX purely for the grandeur of the bigger screen, but will probably grab a viewing at the Cineworld IMAX in Leicester Square as well.

Oh, I see. I didn't realise he specifically wanted to see Jurassic World 2. If he wants to see that, he would do well to go to the BFI IMAX. Its very expensive though.
