Default Atmos Newbie Here Please Help

I have a marantz sr5011, and a couple of spare energy take classic satellite speakers.

Will i be better off placing them on top of my paradigms tilted 10-20 degrees to the ceiling then amp assign it as "front dolby" as an atmos enebled speakers, or mount it close to the ceiling then amp assign it as "front height"?

Also, does timber matching matters for atmos or height speakers?

Your opinion would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

In my opinion, I would recommend you mount them as "height effect" channels closer to the ceiling. I personally didn't notice any real difference when I tried placing my atmos speakers on top of my left/right fronts. The closer I mounted them to the ceiling, the better the overhead effect. As far as timber matching goes, I don't think it really makes much difference.

FYI, upon running several calibration tests with my receiver's microphone, increasing the volume of just the "height effect" also made a big difference. Best of luck, and enjoy your Atmos set up!

I would mount them instead of trying to bounce them. Don't worry too much about the timbre matching. The calibration EQ should help.

Yeah i agree with everyone here saying to mount them up close to the ceiling. If you can tilt them down to where they just angle above your head about a foot or so (use a laser pointer) it will sound nice. I did the same set up a year ago with all svs stuff and sounded good. I have since upgraded to in ceiling speakers which sounds better but for a easy quick way to add atmos mounting the takes up near the ceiling will sound fine.

Are you in. A home or apartment? Reason is that you can get some pretty reasonable in ceiling speakers from mono price.com that would give you the most height for you speakers (since they will be flush to the ceiling).

Townhouse. I've got it tilted on top of my front speakers for now, and have it amp assign to "dolby atmos".

Watched all of game of thrones latest season yesteday, and man it sounded great. I'll try to mount them close to the ceiling over the weekend and see which one is better.

Am curious to hear your feedback. I wonder how much difference there will be in the sound.

If you mount the front ones right over the front side speakers even after running your auto cal feature i find that if i add between .5-1 db in the receiver for those two top front speakers it helps some. It will depend on your room etc so try out some diff things to see how it sounds. One other thing is i would run those speakers at 120hz crossover instead of the 150hz setting. The takes i had as speakers years ago and they sounded nice at 120hz without sounding to tiny. Those takes are not the up firing speakers which is better to run at 150hz so try both crossover settings to see what you like with your ears. I have a dts-x/atmos blu ray that plays sounds through the overhead speakers and it really helped dial in my combo so if you can find one of those it helps.

It's all up, mounted and assigned to front height.

Watched American Made (DTS X)

For my ears it's way better than when i had my takes tilted and assigned to dolby atmos.

Thanks again you all

Attached is a picture of my updated front stage.

Got too exited, I didn't even bother hiding the speaker wires.

I need to update my HT gallery, just dont know how. It's been awhile since i last updated it.

So did you notice a significant difference in the "overhead" soundfield after moving them, compared to their previous location?

I'm renting the house I'm in, and I'm pretty sure the landlord doesn't want holes in the living room ceiling, so it'll be the tilted/ bouncing sound route for me. Just have to get a couple of more speakers.

There is a significant difference. When i had it tilted i can barely hear it coming from above, probably because my takes are not up firing speakers.

looks good, details are not easy to make out because the picture is small, but, what I can see looks nice!

what's important is how it sounds. if it sounds good to you then turn off the lights, turn up the sound (don't split your ears though ) and enjoy the ATMOS soundtrack!

I would think so, I would want all my speakers timber matched.

Hello,

I have a Dolby Atmos question / concern, just a different receiver. I have a Onkyo TX-NR777 which could be used for either a 7.1 or 5.1.2 setup. I am currently setup with all matched Revel speakers at 7.1.
Now I just remembered that I have a pair of old Sony Bookshelves. My plan is to hook the speaker to the ceiling so that they are free falling and facing down, which is not a problem. So, in order for me to use Atmos I would have to switch speakers cables from the rear of the Onkyo, which is slot number 7 / 8; which is also not a problem since they are banana plugs.

My question as follow: Is it worth the work to bring in the ladder and tools to hang them up? Setup a new wire run, vacuum the drywall mess and then return the ladder, tools and vacuum? Lastly, switch the Heights / Rear Surrounds when I want to either rock out on Atmos / DTS X or just stay with my 7.1 setup? Is it unheard of switching back and forth like that? Have you read or know people that switch like that?
I been reading both sides. Some say it depends if your couch is against a wall (which it is not) then stick with 5.1.2. Others say just stick with 7. Others say that 7 channel is Atmos so I am getting it, but the metadata (if u have a setup for a true 5.1.2 and compatible receiver) sounds a lot better running it this way than 7.
Ideally I wish this receiver could hook the height in as well, but you TELL it to either run 7.1 or 5.1.2 instead of me switching them out. I get it that its a cheap unit, I think I paid 549 for it.

I do not yet own an Atmos setup, however, from what I've read, the upmixing works really well, (I've not read about DTS:X's upmixing, but, I know your AVR supports this). I would guess, after playing some Atmos/DTS:X discs, you may prefer 5.1.2 over a more "flat" 7.1.

I think it's worth it, I'd probably do it, but, likely to keep 5.1.2 and use the upmixing feature.

Before getting up there, I highly suggest doing some searching on AVSforum for the best placement and angling of your height speakers.

I have yet to experience an Atmos setup, but, people who have rave about it. Since you have everything you need, you should go for it.

This is true, and thanks. What I read the people do rave about Atmos, and like you mentioned I do have all the stuff. Maybe I give it a try this week.
