France Shin Godzilla 4K - Spectrum Films

It’s up for pre-order now. Comes out in December.

https://www.spectrumfilms.fr/prochai...015571884.html

It’s a bit on the pricy side but will be box set according to some tweets on Twitter and the picture is not indicative of the final product. It’s not English friendly. And everything will apparently be subtitled. Unclear if that means hard subs for signs and the like. So there’s a chance there. I hope it’s removable soft subs though. That might be a dealbreaker but it can be managed perhaps. I considered getting the 4K from Japan a few weeks ago but the price difference turned out to be negligible in the end anyways.

Hopefully Crunchyroll can give us Shin Godzilla on 4K in the US and UK.

I’m pretty sure if they were interested in doing so, they would have already done so.

Yeah, Crunchyroll already announced their December releases. It’s One Piece Collection 33, MHA S6 Part 1 and two other titles.

They are just now getting to their 2nd 4k Blu-ray while Discotek is on their 3rd I believe.

Personally I don’t really see Crunchyroll embracing 4K Blu-ray as much.

60 euros is pretty hefty. Hmm. I'm happy to bide my time for now.

They’ve had years to release it and haven’t, so I’d personally just give up on a US/UK release.

I grabbed the Japanese special edition 4k steelbook of Shin Godzilla on release. Yeah, it would be great if there were subs/dub but it looks amazing. Fortunately, the US blu-ray release looks great and I'm happy with the two. I'd probably go for a new 4k if they included the sub/dub but I'd be in no hurry to pick it up.

I hope there is a English friendly release inc extras

Started watching this today and got insanely bored after
[Show spoiler]Godzilla stopped in place
. WAY too much chatting, not enough doing.

So I skipped through a lot and chatting, chatting, chatting, chatting...for almost an hour. Subplots galore, very unnecessary.

Right after, I went to Wikipedia and sure enough, my exact criticism of the film is on Wikipedia. This is listed as "one of the best Godzilla films"? It's like 80% talking.

Which is weirdly the point. I'm also not that much of a fan of the tons of talking the movie consistently does, but it's mostly a me thing cause I find political talk immensely boring to sit through. But the movie was inspired by the Fukushima disaster and is commentary to the government doing absolutely nothing to stop or help people during the disaster as it's happening. It's the point of the movie, I appreciate that, still boring though.

If you’re expecting a traditional Godzilla or kaiju film, you’ll be disappointed. I loved it, however because political dramas are my thing, and Anno’s style is my cup of tea, although it’s easy to see why many a fan hated it.

I actually got into it, and enjoyed it a lot more the second time I saw it. I think the first time, if you're not expecting such a dialogue-heavy film, it could be off-putting. So re-watching it with that in mind, I found it pretty enthralling, and suspenseful. I do think it's one of those films that would be easier to follow if you're fluent in Japanese, as it's not always easy to follow every single name/title, and bit of dialogue that's subtitled on the screen. I really loved the evolution of Godzilla in the film, and the finale, and last images of the film were pretty great.

I loved it but agree the second and subsequent times watching it make the movie really shine. I totally enjoyed the political side and their responses just as much as Godzilla himself. It was keeping up with the subtitles and trying to see the action at the same time that made the first viewing challenging. I own the Japanese 4k and the Funimation blu-ray. I've watched it enough that now watching the 4k without subtitles is no problem. The Japanese 4k looks and sounds spectacular.

As others have mentioned, It’s more of a bureaucratic thriller, so if you go in expecting an action film you will be disappointed. It’s probably why it is considered one of the better Godzilla films, it breaks the mold both in the above manner, and the usual mythos surrounding G. If you dislike people and dialogue in your Godzilla movies this one definitely is not for you.

Personally, I thought the effects and their sparse usage relative to Hollywood blockbusters, made them more impactful.

I was wondering the same thing. This release says it is in Dolby Vision, can anyone tell me if the Japanese 4k release was in Dolby Vision or was it just regular HDR? I can't find anything that says the Japanese 4K discs were in Dolby Vision.

The Japanese UHD is regular HDR. No DolbyVision

The DV on the French release is fake (no metadata difference vs HDR10 base) much like the HDR itself (~100 nits in an HDR container, but with some WCG usage into P3), but it’s on a BD-100 with a higher bitrate (~80 mbps and from a friend’s findings, the encode is rather good, so rare Com’On Screen W.

My biggest gripe with this film is the actress (Satomi Ishihara) who plays the US President's half-Japanese daughter. I feel like if they had casted a true half-Japanese/American actress who could speak both Japanese and English fluently, that character would've come across a lot better. As it is now, every time she appears on screen, or at the very least starts speaking English, it takes me out of the movie.
