It isn't that Ratner is a horrible director like our good friend Uwe Boll, it is that he is a generic 'for hire' director. He doesn't bring anything to the table. He doesn't have any style, flare, or artistic motivation other than getting the paycheck and putting the story on film. He just doesn't fit a project like God of War. I fear this will end up playing out like Doom. Completely ignoring the source, and dumbing it down for a general audience.

I agree with most here. I really hated X3:TLS.
That being said I really enjoy Prison Break and it was Ratner that brought that to Fox. I will see how it goes and if he has epic visions it will go well. I am thinking Lord of the Rings with violence, gore and gods. |

just curious, who did you guys think they were going to get?
you think del toro, spielberg, scorsese or the coen brothers want to direct a movie based on the most violent video game out there. i am actually very, very pleased its not boll, because i was scarred of that. God of War really doesn't have too much of a story, hopefully its simplistic enough for Ratner to stick too and hopefully Jaffe has some sort of approval input in this. I think Ratner will do a good job with this. Im worried about the style and how this movie is going to look most of all and Im not sure that there are many directors out there period, who can pull this off. its gonna be really heavy on the CGI I think or feel nothing like the game. |

This will be terrible. Im 95% sure of this. Ratner is a terrible director, he has a good eye for visuals but other than that he's a hack IMO.
The only movie he has ever done that I thought was any good was Red Dragon. The Rush Hour's are bad, one worse than the other, X3 was an abomination, and While I enjoyed the first season of Prison Break you cant deny that each season after has gotten incredibly worse than the previous and completely ridiculous. |

This is indeed ominous.
It makes me wish that I knew important Hollywood people or had them in my Rolodex. I don't know the first thing about making movies either, but that quality appears to mean "Qualified to handle slam dunk multi-million dollar franchises." Then again, I don't know why this is shocking. They did give Michael Bay Transformers as well and thought that pervert Ang Lee was a good idea for Hulk as well. Then again, even non-franchised stuff can be arguably said to be mismanaged. Summer blockbuster creative teams apparently aren't decided by the same folks that create the genuinely moving dramas, action movies, and comedies. Anyone remeber the ride Roland Emmerich gave us on Independence Day? There is still belief that he's a quality director out there too. Independence Day, Godzilla, Day After Tomorrow, and 10,000 B.C. (admittedly not a summer movie). I get the dry heaves just thinking about those. Hey, Hollywood give me $200M! With that kind of cash that you freely give these hacks, I can put together 100 minutes of contrived, cliched dialogue with cool special effects too. |

I have no problems with the CGI. You'd need it to make this film and the quality of it has improved drastically since the late 90's when even senior citizens could outrun explosions and other carnage (cue old man running on the dock scene from Godzilla or dog jumping to safety just in time under bridge in ID4) but it's the story mutilations that I think really get people ticked off. While God of War may not be Heavy on the story front, it does have one. A decent writer / director combo could do something with it if they have the will to do so.
