4.5 stars for audio...OK. But 3.5/5 for picture is a joke. Read the review here at Blu-ray.com and the one over at hometheaterspot instead. This is a 5 star transfer, maybe 4.5 if you are really, really picky. Don't bother with HDD's nonsense.

A 3.5 Star PQ rating is definitely hard to swallow. At times the environments were drab but thats the movie's environment. The transfer was spot-on perfect. This picture should have definitely received a 5.0 Star PQ rating.

I have not seen the movie but judging by other reviews here and on the web, this particular review is a little suspect. Those guys have no shame.

He loves High Def,

He'll warm up to Blu Ray once he gets over his man crush on HD DUD.

Like most thick headed HD DUD-ers,.. they still don't realize it's just another failed format at this point.

I think he's pretty smart though (for a DUD-Lover) and he'll come to see the light soon.

Angry He's deluded and bitter!

I just watched this last night, and it was amazing.

I think it is a great movie (better than 28 Weeks) and I love Mila Jovovich.

Besides all that, the picture has a lot of HD pop, especially the outdoor scenes in the desert. I mean, you can see individual rocks on the ground. It's that sharp. (Reminds me of the transfer of Seven Years in Tibet).

Here's a different review (HomeTheaterSpot) who I say is spot on:

I thought the review you posted was a bit harsh on the picture aspect. Definitely some great scenes with a lot of detail, and honestly the first viewing of a zombie revealed too much detail! The makeup was too obvious and you could even see the ripple of the rubber mask effect.

I'm not sure I'd call it demo material, but it at least deserves 4.5 stars for picture.

Keep in mind that he DID give a 5 star review to Lost third season and a fairly good one of Superbad.

I'd say that he hasn't done enough reviews to really show a preference for either format.

I do agree that 3.5 is strange on the video quality, but as I have not seen the movie on blu myself, I can't judge yet.

I'm not saying he's biased towards HD DVD. I just think his writing style and wording is subpar compared to Peter Bracke and Kenneth Brown.

The only thing I can't stand about Extinction's look is the touch-up digital smoothing/blurring they do to Milla's face on many close-up scenes. It looks awful and is blatently obvious. Throws me out of the movie everytime. She looks like a porcelain doll sometimes! I've been told it was noticable in the theater. Yes, I know it's not a problem with the Blu-Ray... it's just the movie and some poor choices made in production.

These reviews are subjective. We should stop looking at film reviews from the format war view point, as it is over, and maybe consider that picture quality is determined by the original source material and the transfer.

A reviewer could place more emphasis on one than the other, you are buying the film not the codec or bit rate. His complaints seem to focus on the makeup can close facial shots as sonicbox notes. So he is criticising the film, which is what we should expect.

Its not like we will ever see the film on HD-DVD, after all.

I told Josh I didn't agree. He told me not every movie should be given 4 to 5 stars. wtf...if the movie deserves it it deserves it. you can't be holding a 4 or 5 star rating back just because you gave one out already. most of sony's and disney's transfers are 4.5 to 5 star transfers. if they are that good they should be rewarded.

I agree they should use a wider range of stars to mark films. Everything seems to be 4 to 5.
