This is almost definitely just an imported release of the UK / Germany / AUS Studio Canal releases. Studio Canal makes one disc, and sells it throughout various territories via their labels in each respective country. For instance, in the UK these are coming out via Optimum - but it's the same disc as the Germany release and, presumably, the Australian release. I google-ed 'Shock Media Group' and it seems to be an Australian based company - probably the local label releasing these titles there.

Amazon does imports on a regular basis, so no surprise there. The Best Buy and Barnes & Noble listings are odd, but these things randomly happen. At one point Best Buy was showing entries for The Fog and Escape From New York on Blu-ray, and those never came to light - presumably just wires crossed somewhere because certain distributors were sending the region-free BDs from Europe over here as imports. I'd wager that all these listings were somehow set in effect by the UK/DE/AUS releases.

It's worth noting that these discs do have a 'US' option on the menu - and when you select that, a Lionsgate logo shows up. So these seem to be slated to eventually come out here as domestic Lionsgate releases - but when that will happen, who knows. Certainly not this Tuesday, there would be official announcements and cover arts and all that.

So is this region-free, and say if I get it through FYE, it won't ship, due to them probably not having it?

Yes, the Contempt BD has been confirmed to be region-free.

As for FYE having it, I have no idea. The link you provided led to a 404 Not Found page, and I couldn't find Contempt myself on the FYE site - perhaps it was a mistake, and they've already fixed it. I've never known FYE to import titles before, but I could be wrong. Same for Best Buy and Barnes & Noble - they aren't exactly known for imports, so I'm not sure how an order would work out from them.

But you certainly can get it from many other sites. Amazon.co.uk ships to the US, as do HMV.com and blahdvd.com - I've shopped at all 3, and had good service to the US. And since the Contempt BD is a domestic release for all 3 of those sites (all 3 are UK based), there won't be any problems with them getting stock.

The shipping isn't actually too bad. I mean, it's not as good as a domestic release, but I've found it to be better than the 'import tax' domestic sites seem to put on any import title (i.e., getting a UK release from Amazon.co.uk is cheaper than getting the 'imported version' from Amazon.com).

Ok, that FYE link works - I don't know why I had trouble finding it on their site, heh. That's a decent price if they do end up getting it - though I don't know how much they charge for shipping. I just checked my blahdvd.com invoice, and the total including shipping was 16.95 GBP, or $27.15. I'd just check out various sites, do currency conversions (use http://www.xe.com/ucc/), and pick a place.

Oh, and just remember to search UK sites with 'Le Mepris', the original title, as that is the title on the cover of the European releases. Domestic sites importing it will likely have it listed as just Contempt.

I called two Barnes and Noble stores and spoke to someone in the video dept. I asked them to check to see if they are gonna get in CONTEMPT and gave them their UPS # from their website. It looks like both stores confirmed the same exact info... they won't carry it in stores and the item is setup for HOME DELIVERY only.

I then asked to see if any of their whses had any in stock and they both confirmed that they have none stocked at this time.

So it seems it could be a wait.

UPDATE FYE same response... in fact they are so film literate as usualy they can't even spell the film let alone find it in their system. Looks like .com for them also.

I have a feeling none of these onlines will have it stocked to even ship tuesday.

3.5 for PQ and 4.0 for AQ is more than "Acceptable" in my book.

I think Josh Z (the HDD reviewer) is way off base here.

+1, not much else to say here, except to say that I personally feel that the quality is much improved from the CC dvd, which Josh Z has apparently not seen either. (As he compares this to Pierrot Le Fou instead)

I think the way Studio Canal is hyping themselves, he expected something that rivals Criterion blurays not the dvds. Surely blus are still better than dvds but how much better are they?

All the releases (UK, USA, German, French, etc.) are identical and equally good.
