Default Discotek - Do you want DVD or SDBD? Vote now!

https://www.facebook.com/Discotekmedia/
https://twitter.com/discotekmedia

We are thinking about no longer creating DVD collections for long anime TV series. Classic series and also titles that have been released before on DVD but don't have HD masters. For example, a long series like Marmalade Boy would only come out as an SDBD collection with 2 Blu Ray discs in standard definition, and not seperate DVD sets.

Also, if the title has HD masters, then there might be a more expensive HD Blu Ray set, and a lower priced SDBD set. No DVD sets will be created.

Reasons for doing this would be: Less discs in the collection, lower price compared to multiple DVD sets, BD discs are more durable then DVDs, consumers prefer BD for future purchases, BD subtitles look nicer than DVD subtitles, title was already released on DVD in the past, easy to store taking up less space.

Movies, OVAs, and shorter TV series in standard definition would still get separate DVD releases or DVD/BD combo packs for the foreseeable future. Brand new titles that were created in HD will be released Blu Ray only.

I would prefer the SD BRs as well.. though if there was one complaint, is there a reason the FIST OF THE NORTH STAR SDBD release is @ $60.00? I know it has a lot more episodes than COWBOY BEBOP, but that is a 2 disc set at @ $25 to $30, whereas the FOTNS has 3 discs and is 2 to 3 times more expensive.

What do you guys on BR.com think would be a good price point (it's 3500 minutes long, but it's in SD)?

Because Discotek is releasing very niche, non-mainstream titles I don't think the price points are horrible. $60 for FotNS, or $60-$80 for Mazinger, Great Mazinger, or even a smaller anime like The Darkstalkers on bluray would be fine with me cuz I know I'm not gonna get them anywhere else.

I mean, they could price gauge you more and give a lot less than they have...

The full, trademarked name is Blu-ray Disc. That’s why it’s abbrivated as "BD"

I am for this as long as long as there is no forced upscaling or ugly images. But I don't even have a Facebook any more anyways.

If it's SDBD there would, of course, be no upscaling. If it was upscaled, it would no longer be standard definition.

I'm pro-all of that (voted SDBD of course) except this ^ quoted part seems incredibly counter-intuitive.

Laserdisc is preferable. CAV, specifically.

I voted BD as well. We need to keep moving forward or else be left behind.

Cheers,

Surely in order to have a 480i image fill your 1080p or 4K screen some upscaling has to happen somewhere.

I voted SDBD.

I wouldn't mind if Nickelodeon released Avatar: The Last Airbender like that,
assuming a true HD master is out of the question, so we could have the complete series in just 3 or 4 discs instead of 16.

You can actually watch Avatar in HD now digitally. Looks really good. Hope it gets a blu-ray one day.

Obviously. But if it happens before being committed to disc then we’re not talking about an SDBD any longer.

I like the idea of SDBD. Really hope Lovely Complex ends up on one. If only to improve the subtitles. ITs the only DVD of theirs I have and would be happy to get rid of it.

Same here. I would rather just have a BD and no SDBD than both if that is the case.
