It looks like with this IMAX bull we may get 2.35:1 and over AR movies "formatted" to fill our 16:9 screen.
I liked most of the THX Laser Disc, DVDs and BDs or their time 'though I was perfectly happy without it. A good Mastering job, color grading, HDR pass, upconversion if necessary, compression and authoring is still a good mastering job regardless if it bears a badge or not. |

Will there be a XXXX Calibrated Mode dedicated button on the display remote so user can scroll through modes for all and every specific content? How trivial it will all seem on our 16K wall screens of reality. :snort: :disdain:

Y’all are missing the part where they’ll have films remastered for an “IMAX mode”. On their website FAQs they state films shot with IMAX cameras will retain their aspect ratios. The language states select IMAX films which could mean that it’ll be at the studios discretion but I think it’ll just mean “whatever actually has an expanded ratio will get it” since not all films released in IMAX take advantage of that. This isn’t just about the hardware, they’ll be branding content too.

“This advanced process accurately reduces noise and grain under the filmmaker’s guidance to best optimize the content for a much higher quality, higher brightness 4K HDR display. Without this technology, high-dynamic range content can actually look worse than what was originally seen and intended by the filmmaker due to the excessive noise and grain in the film.” Every time I read the bolded phrase in the above paragraph and think of who and who is not present for the mastering of home deliverables I’m reminded of this – “done in consultation with the film’s director of photography” - http://cinemalowdown.com/2012/11/cin...exclusive.html |

I've been looking through the announcement, and I don't think I'm terribly excited about it.
Dolby being their direct competitor these days, these IMAX Enhanced Blu-rays will most likely not feature Dolby Vision. Which means, HDR is limited to HDR10. Or, plot twist, HDR10+ in the future. We'll see. And they will not feature Dolby Atmos either. Since that's the key part of the announcement. Not surprising too, since DTS X was used to mix the IMAX Laser 12 channel surround sound mix. And expanded ratio is nothing revolutionary since Blu-rays can do 1.78-1.89:1 with minimal to no black bars just like that without breaking a sweat. So the only thing these Blu-rays are really enhanced is noise and grain removal. And that makes me nervous. What concerns me now is, with this announcement, does it mean Sony and Paramount (and other studios in the future) will now stop producing 4K Blu-rays with Dolby Vision+Atmos? Or will they release a separate SKU for 'IMAX Enhanced' 4K Blu-rays? |
