Default Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor

Quote:
As movie audiences gear up for the next installment of The Hobbit, gamers now have their own Tolkien project to get excited about. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is on its way to a game screen near you on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, we feel the upcoming game showcases some of the gameplay innovation potential now possible on next-generation consoles through its groundbreaking Nemesis System.

While many previous games set in Middle-earth have revolved around the major events or characters depicted in Tolkien's books, Shadow of Mordor offers a new chapter that fits comfortably between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Players control a lone ranger by the name of Talion as he journeys deep into the heart of Mordor in the days before it transforms into a blasted hellscape. Along the way, developer Monolith is exploring a fascinating next-gen approach to enemies, encounters, and storytelling, one in which every player shapes their own story through the choices they make. The Nemesis System assures that every enemy you fight is a named foe, and if they survive their battle with you, they continue to grow, improve, and act in the world, even as you attempt to do the same with Talion. Our cover story recounts our extensive look at the game in action, from combat and leveling to story and setting.

Yay! Another cross-generational game that has no chance of taking real advantage of next-gen hardware!

Couldn't agree more. Does sound like a good game but could have been so much more if they would just cut the damn ties on the PS3/360.

I want a LOTR game like Battle For Middle Earth 2 on the xbox 360! I miss that game and hated it when EA closed the servers.

Thanks for the heads up on this thread Detective392.

Yeah, this does look very promising for an open world single player adventure with a lot of elements it seems, inspired by the classic 'open world' Soul Reaver and Legacy of Kain games on PS1 and PS2. Especially with the shifting into the spirit plane to access things unavailable in the physical world, though it does match the theme already established in The Lord of the Rings, where the Wraiths can find you faster if you put the ring on, because that is their realm.

Yeah, the AI of the enemy and good characters changing as the game goes on sounds very innovative, and was mentioned as next generation. I wonder how it will work on the PS3, and what the advantages will be with the PS4 version aside from more complex AI routines.

It's hinted that no two play throughs will be quite the same, since the enemies change their approach and advance in ranks each time you re enter that area based on what happened there prior. Good stuff.

This also takes place largely in Mordor, to keep the game more focused and avoid the story telling of Rivendell and Hobbitown, The Lonely Mountain.

Hopefully they can squeeze in some forests. On the map, within the mountains surrounding Mordor and Mount Doom, there is a sea where possibly the character can use a boat or more likely swim. Or like Red Dead Redemption, drown if he steps too far in.

In Soul Reaver, the water becomes like air in the spirit realm, allowing access on foot to the bottom without water getting in the way.

Should be very interesting.

Old post below:

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is an Open World Action game taking place in Middle Earth prior to The Lord of the Rings, much as the Hobbit does in the timeline. Game Informer Issue 248 lists a cover article on it. Looks very promising for 2014. In time for the 3rd Hobbit movie hopefully.

It's published by WB. I will definitely be waiting for user reviews to consider this.

I am loving what they have planned with the AI and hope they can pull it off. I would love some forests thrown into the game as I'm sure the gameplay and strategy would be really cool with using tree's as covers or rivers somehow.

Hopefully we get our first trailer or gameplay reveal at the VGX next week.

Do they also publish the Batman Arkham games from Rocksteady?
Keeping in mind, Monolith is the developer who also made Gotham City Imposters, which got good reviews though I haven't played it since it was downloadable only.

Below, copy/pasted games they put out in recent times.

2005 The Matrix Online
2005 F.E.A.R.
2005 Condemned: Criminal Origins
2008 Condemned 2: Bloodshot
2009 F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin
2012 Gotham City Impostors
2012 Guardians of Middle-earth
2014 Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Forests will add some nice hiding spots for villains, spiders, etc. Yeah, trees would be good for fending off arrows or projectiles, and also losing faster running or larger enemies. You could hide in the forest till you found a way to recover your energy.

A preview of the game play would be nice.

I'm hoping for at least two camera views. One over the shoulder waist high, and one more distant 3PV to allow for a fresh view into the world, along with a close enough view to "be there as the character", much like in Fallout 3.

Looks good. I really like the idea of the Nemesis system, hopefully it will work as well in the full game.

I only recently had this come onto my radar thanks to the IGN article and i'm pretty stoked. It would be amazing if this lives up to the hype and hopes we all have of a massive world and LOTR setting of middle earth done justice.

Instantly, I think Witcher 3 comes to mind where you want a world 20% bigger than Skyrims and populated to the hilt with Middle Earth mythology and authenticity all while playing out with a combat system like AC IV and Arkham City combined.

Sadly, expectations might be a tad high for this title and I might be let down, but if it hits the mark, HOT DAMN!!

This looks very cool, and some of the developer's other efforts like Condemned 2 and the F.E.A.R. series are very underrated. The dev can definitely make a spooky game.

The Astral alter world of the classic Soul Reaver with Raziel, from Crystal Dynamic's 1999 title may have influenced this title, though with the One Ring, and the movie's portray of what it's like while wearing the Ring, the similarities are inevitable.

Warner Brothers has revealed the release date, box art, and pre-order bonuses for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

The box art, which you can see below, shows a wraith-ified Talion walking through a battlefield amidst several (dead) goblins. You'll be able to get your hands on it when it releases this year on October 7.

Those who pre-order Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor will receive the Dark Ranger bonus pack, which adds the "Test of Power" challenge mode, letting you face Sauron's warriors and earn upgrades before starting the game. Leaderboard access and a "darker" Talion character skin are included as well.

This looks very good. I love some LOTR themed games. I do wish we got a new Battle for Middle Earth game. The previous 2 and the expansions were great, although better suited for the PC.
