Regarding possible vision damage with VR

I know this subject is still up in the air since VR is still relatively new and some people have concerns about having the screen so close to the eyes in VR might cause damage to vision.

I wanted to add my input on the subject based on my own personal experience with it. But I didn't want to say much about it until actually getting an eye test.

Firstly I want to say that I've been wearing the same glasses for fifteen sixteen years. And when I first started playing VR I had to wear my glasses while playing. But since, maybe total coincidence and possibly having nothing to do with my VR use. My near sight has gotten much better. I no longer need to wear my glasses in VR at all and I have to take them off to read up close. Even taking them off to make this post since I can now see the text clearly with my glasses off.

I should mention that I have spent a lot of time in VR. From what I've read probably more than most people do on this forum. Sometimes playing for more than 12 hours straight with short breaks to eat or whatever. I think I've done nearly a full 24 hours a couple times with Skyrim. I don't remember exactly how long my longest stretch was. But on more than one occasion I've played until I have gotten so tired just can't keep my eyes open any longer. Tried to go all night and all day before. Someone I work with keeps telling me I'm going to ruin my eyes playing VR that much. But honestly my eyes seem to be getting better not worse. And around the house I have my glasses off now more often than I have them on. But I still need them for my far sight. If I'm watching TV from all the way across the room I still need them on.

So today I went to renew my drivers license. And being aware that my vision has been changing I was a little worried I might not pass the test because of not being sure how good my far sight is. But I passed the eye test with flying colors, easily seeing the line of letters they told me to read.

So hard to say at this point if it's the VR that has been making my near sight better or if that is just a coincidnce. But at any rate my eyes have definitely not gotten any worse due to my use of VR. Seeing how easily I passed the eye test for my drivers license.
