Default What's the point of ripping or transferring Blu-ray to PSP?

Just curious thats all
whether you transfer a dvd or blu-ray into psp, the video would be compressed to fit the psp screen, wouldn't the quality be the same?

Process #1 : put dvd in pc, rip dvd, run through encoding program then transfer to psp.

Process #2 : put blu ray into ps3, hit a button on the menu that transfers a version perfectly encoded and formatted for the psp.

Seems a no brainer to me to be honest.
There are less legal processes but those are not for this board.

are you referring to the "portable version" of a movie that will be included on a blu-ray disc, or are you talking about ripping a movie then transferring to the psp?

true, if I can do it with the touch of a button, I would transfer from my blu-ray
never thought about it that way, I actually never got into ripping my dvds into psp due to time consumption required

Since UMD was a huge success Just another feature if you have a PSP otherwise it's not gonna be used by most people unless you want to convert from PSP to DVD.

Id love to. I travel, and this would actually get me to buy a psp to be able to watch moves on the airplane and in the airport.

I honestly have never bought a UMD movie, or ripped a DVD one of the other ways, but I plan on using this feature.

It's not about having an portable HD copy of the movie, but rather just a portable copy of the movie in whatever resolution the PSP wants to give us.

Default what's the point...?

One major point that has gone unmentioned---this is BD making an effort to meet the provision for Managed Copy:

Quote:
Managed Copy refers to a system by which consumers can make legal copies of films and other digital content protected by AACS. This requires the device to obtain authorization by contacting a remote server on the Internet. The copies will still be protected by DRM, so infinite copying is not possible (unless it is explicitly allowed by the content owner). It is mandatory for content providers to give the consumer this flexibility in both the HD DVD and the Blu-ray standards (commonly called Mandatory Managed Copy). The Blu-ray standards adopted Mandatory Managed Copy later than HD DVD, after HP requested it.
Possible scenarios for Managed Copy include (but are not limited to):

Create an exact duplicate onto a recordable disc for backup
Create a full-resolution copy for storage on a media server
Create a scaled-down version for watching on a portable device
This feature was not included in the interim standard, so the first devices on the market did not have this capability. It is expected to be a part of the final AACS specification.
I didn't know anything about MMC until I read some FUDdy-dud's ill-informed statements on another forum that HD DVD's specs included some sort of "mandatory backup" plan and BD's did not. (Thanks to everyone in the HD Rant thread that helped straighten me out.)

So besides removing some legitimate "fair use" incentive for decrypting & ripping a BD for one's personal media player or PC, this effort defuses an outdated and insignificant HD DVD talking point. (Of course, now they're ALL outdated & insignificant... )

Edit: Hmm. Two threads more or less on this topic and I think I picked the wrong one for this post---should have gone here, where the discussion is about Sony demonstrating this feature...

1. People who commute on public transit for over an hour a day might find it useful.
2. PSP-2000 has a video out port that can be used in cars with a-v inputs.

If you can do this with the PSP, I am 100% sure that computer software will follow.

This is an advantage of Blu-Ray's 20GB in storage space. A UMD at 1.8GB.

A studio can easily budget 1.8GB of space for a separate encode of the movie for managed copy.

Im my opinion this is one of the best ideas I have heard of coming out of the Blu-Ray camp. Everyone knows that, at least in the US, UMD is a failure. This technology allows Sony a means out of the UMD distribution business while still providing customers what they want. Not only do you get a UMD movie for your money, you get a BLU-RAY MOVIE ALSO.

GENIUS!!!

Now, I get a movie I can travel with and watch legally. Sure it is not DVD but 2GB of HD space is nothing these days. I don't have to carry a binder of DVDs when I travel.

This is UMD round 2.

I hope you get the general idea. I have been up all night working on a project at work so my thought might not appear on the screen as they are running through my head. Need to go to bed, but wait, it is morning, time to go to work?!?!

My god, it is GENIUS!!!!

Ripping to the PSP must be awfully long, and the movies will take alot of space I guess...
But the UMD being "dead" I guess this would be another selling argument for the BluRay and the incoming Memory Stick (16gb) so the people who have PSPs can take their favourite movies with them and watch them while travelling and so on ...

I don't own a PSP so this doesn't interests me but I guess some people would be happy to have a "1-touch" ripping tool.

My PSP would certainly get more use since I could put a couple of my kids favorite flicks on it and they'd have that for use on trips and the like. It may not have appeal for those that want to see movies always on a big screen with full surround sound, but for when you just want a simple comedy or a kids flick, it's great. Portability for the teens in the family as well while they're out and about.

You are not getting it. When you put it in your PS3, you are not taking the 40GB movie, compressing it to 1.8GB, and then transferring it to your PSP. Because of Blu-Rays size 1.8GB can be budgeted for the compressed version of the movie. That version is decrypted and transfered to the PSP.

It sounds like a great idea to me. It could even convince me to get a PSP to go with the PS3!

But why make it a proprietary Sony solution?

It would be fantastic if all the studios would put a portable version of the movie on all their BDs that could be downloaded from any Blu-ray player (with a USB port, obviously) onto any portable device capable of handling the DRM properly (ie. cell phone, PSP or iPod).

IMHO, this is exactly the type of added value feature that will make people go for the Blu-ray version of a film over the DVD. Much more so than PiP or internet extras ever will.

So come on BDA, let's get an agreed portable version standard added to the Blu-ray specs that isn't tied to a single manufacturer!

Much rather have a mobile copy of my movie provided for me as opposed to ripping and transferring to my psp. Especially since I don't even want to try ripping a blu-ray and that's basically all I buy now (cept for some TV series on dvd and a cheap one here or there if I find it)

Forgot about this one

Who owns Disney?
Who owns Apple?

Is Disney on the BDA board of directors?
Is Apple on the BDA board of directors?

Disney = Steve Jobs = Apple

How did Steve Jobs get 2 seats on the Blu-Ray board of directors? This guy is a genius.

I am 100% sure this is not a PSP only thing.
