Thumbs up From Up on Poppy Hill coming in 2013!

Amazon Pre-order is now up with a release date of September 3rd, 2013.

From Up on Poppy Hill Blu-ray

Great news Studio Ghibli fans! It was just announced that From Up on Poppy Hill will be making its theatrical and home video debut in North America in 2013. This comes courtesy of GKIDS Films who confirmed the release on their twitter account.

Source

GKID's has announced that it will have over 3 hours of extras!

Quote:
The Blu-ray and DVD release of FROM UP ON POPPY HILL contains over three hours of bonus materials and includes: original Japanese language and English language versions with subtitles and dubtitles; feature-length storyboards; celebrity cast recording featurette with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews; an interview with Goro Miyazaki; original Japanese trailer and TV spots; the music video for the theme song by Aoi Teshima; and a featurette about Yokohama, exploring the history of the sea-side setting where the film takes place. Bonuses exclusive to the Blu-ray edition include a staff speech and press conference by Hayao Miyazaki days after the Fukushima earthquake; and a 20-page booklet containing the original project proposal by Hayao Miyazaki and a letter from Goro Miyazaki.

Quote:
Plot Summary: Umi Matsuzaka, the eldest sibling in a close-knit family of five, raises a pair of signal flags everyday at her seaside house in Yokohama Bay without fail in anticipation of the return of her father, who went missing in action during the Korean War. In school, Umi finds herself involved in a student movement seeking to prevent the demolition of an old club house. In the process, she falls in love with the newspaper club president Jun Kazama, only to find out that they might be related by blood.

Our college theater already has it scheduled for March '13, at the end of a Feb-March Ghibli-on-film retrospective to accompany it.
(Good thing I have free tickets. )

Bumping this thread since March 15 is coming up. I'm so curious as to what rating this movie will acquire on RT.. and of course, I'll finally be seeing it myself, too - if it comes to Europe theatrically as well.

Who's excited though? Any animation / Ghibli fans planning on catching it in cinemas?

Also does anyone have a source to confirm in how many theaters this movie opens?

I hope it plays in as many theaters as Secret World Of Arrietty did...I don't want to have to blow $15 on train fare to see it in Boston.

Our area, with plenty of cineplexes, is getting it at the college Indie arthouse.
Add in that this technically isn't a Disney release, and, like Tales From Earthsea, you might want to start scouting out for local indie arthouses too. (First saw Spirited Away at the Waltham arthouse, that's a nice place.)

Hoping this plays near me, the family and I are excited about this. I love Ghibli films and my kid recently became obsessed with Arriety, so she is pumped about catching this in theaters as well.

nothing else
I have the Taiwan release (which had the concert video, the music video, a press conference, postcards, and the Yokohama map as extras) and although its a great release compared to the Hong Kong version, I am seriously thinking of double dipping since the English dub was well produced and the extras seem to be extensive.

In Arrietty's Song, the lyrics say Arrietty is 14 years old. Also, it's common for films to have different literal titles in other countries. I think Wreck it Ralph in Japan is called Sugar Rush in Japanese. And I doubt it's the first movie where some of the character's names were changed to suit the audience of the country (I watched the Mandarin dubs of some Ghibli films and the names can differ).

But back to Poppy Hill, it's has the same producers (Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy), the same director, and the same screenwriter as The Secret World of Arrietty's US dub. It's a well handed dub though. It does add a opening narration to the film not present in the original (part of which is heard in the trailer), but it helps explain a few things about the story.

I just picked up From Up on Poppy Hill from Best Buy today. It seems there's a serious audio problem on the blu ray disc where the dialogue is barely above a whisper on both the English and Japanese tracks. Has anyone else encountered this problem with their copy?

Mine should be arriving from Amazon tomorrow, hopefully this isn't a widespread issue since it isn't mentioned in this site's review. Sorry you are having a problem.

How much was this title at Best Buy? I was wondering if any stores would carry it on release day, so I decided to keep my Amazon pre-order.

Really wish Gkids would get all the Ghibli licences. The packaging for Poppy Hill is fantastic! and it even came with a little booklet with concept art! Disney needs to hand over all the rights to them! I'm tired of them picking "the best" titles to only release on blu-ray. I want Tales From Earthsea on Blu-ray and the Yamadas! oh well...

I've got mine in-hand, are you talking about the entire film having this audio problem?

Edit: I just scanned through the first hour(about 8 chapters?) and didn't hear any audio dropouts, or unusally low audio? Very difficult to turn a Ghibli movie off without watching it!

Well this title isn't at any best buy within 50 miles of me. Unbelievable. I guess I'll have to order it online. I didn't think to check before I left and walked out of BB empty handed.
