Default 4K UHD digital general question

I'm new to buying digital codes as I only recently purchased a 4K OLED...I've looked at the 4Ksheet that everyone seems to reference but it's still confusing...take a movie like the newly released Matrix 4K...it says it's not available in Vudu UHD but is available in FandangoNow UHD...but then it says it's also Movies Anywhere compatible...I thought MA meant you could transfer your copy to another provider (for example FandangoNow to Vudu)

does this mean that I will be able to transfer it over to Vudu but it just won't be the UHD version?...what happens if later on Vudu does make the movie available in UHD?...does my copy automatically get upgraded to UHD?

If you purchase the UHD version at FandangoNow, it should port into your connected MA account with UHD rights. Any provider (ie. Vudu) will grant those same rights if it is available. Since it is currently only HD on Vudu, you will only get HD for now. Once Vudu has the UHD version available, it SHOULD upgrade the movie on Vudu to UHD. Sometimes there are little hiccups (like what is currently happening w/ the Jurassic Park movies) but it should populate within 24 hours.

thanks for the info...do you know if there's any real difference in 4K picture quality between watching it on FandangoNow versus watching it on Vudu?...meaning which is the best provider to watch 4K movies...or are they all basically the same?

From my UHD/4K experiences so far:

#1 - Apple TV 4K
#2 - VUDU thru Roku
#457 - FandangoNow thru Roku

Not sure about Apple TV (don't have one), or the problem odisn might have with FN, but I have no problems with FN, I find Vudu and FN to be about equal as far as playback and quality goes.

As mentioned above, some items are UHD only in FN. If they are UV (or MA) they will port to UV locker (or MA, we hope) and eventually become UHD once Vudu adds that option.

For example John Wick was only recently made UHD in Vudu. I had it UHD in the UV locker from a Flixster redeem, and once the UHD option was made available in Vudu, it became UHD there.

So those few items that are only UHD in FN, just watch them there, or wait until Vudu adds it.

FandangoNow doesn't have Dolby Vision support so that right there is a big negative for me...Vudu supports DV...using Movies Anywhere I connected my Vudu and FN accounts but when I watch the UHD version of Last Jedi on FN the HDR logo doesn't appear at all...it plays perfectly on Vudu

The only film in UHD that I have to watch on FandangoNow is Groundhog Day. On my Roku Premiere + it flickers and pixelates every few seconds, thus making it unwatchable. I have 4K UV rights, but it's in my MA transactions as HD. I need to figure out a way to get it pushed to iTunes in 4K, now that FandangoNow is MA.

I have also noticed this with Dracula Untold streaming through FandangoNow and wanted to reply that I think FN has inferior streaming but wasn't sure if it's isolated or more widespread. My wife watched Hostiles on FN and seemed to have no concerns so might be spotty but not for all content. FN obviously has an edge because (aside from Apple) it has more UHD titles than Vudu.

That's weird, because I was checking Last Jedi in both Vudu and FN yesterday, and FN was definitely kicking in the HDR same as Vudu (for Last Jedi, HDR10 I would guess). As for Dolby Vision, I would favor using Vudu for those items in DV

I have the Roku Ultra, and wired. I'm not sure if one or both of those make the difference. But I've never had any flicker, pixelation, or green or purple screens popping up.

FandangoNow has a lot of 4K UHD with HDR. Many of their digital streams also have DTS-HD lossy for selected equipment.

Vudu offers both Dolby Vision and HDR10 support, the latter was added recently. Many of their streams offer Dolby Atmos for selected equipment.

FandangoNow is more stricter with hardware requirements so you may only get 4K UHD. On XBox One and some Roku TVs, you should get the full 4K with HDR and DTS-HD experience (note: XBox One needs to be set to PCM 5.1/7.1 for DTS-HD compatibility).

Vudu just makes sure your equipment is 4K at the least and the stream is set to be compatible with your equipment. If Vudu doesn’t detect a 4K display, you’ll get the 1080p stream at the highest.

I rebooted the Roku last night and tried again, just in case it was a bad day or something. Same result...every few seconds the picture breaks up. It very well could be something in my hardware setup that isn't making FandangoNow happy (wired fiber internet to Roku Premiere+ to Onkyo TX-NR676 to LG UJ7700), but it is certainly frustrating.

I probably just need to contact MoviesAnywhere and see if they'll fix my transaction history to correctly indicate that I have 4K rights, so I can watch it on my AppleTV.

They got back to me fast. Unfortunately for me, they say that UV locker rights only transfer into MA through VUDU (not both VUDU and FandangoNow, as I assumed). Therefore I'm stuck until VUDU adds Groundhog Day in UHD, if they ever do.

If you don't mind losing your UV rights, I've had success with Sony Pictures Help to get MA rights. I redeemed Zero Dark Thirty right before MA was announced. They removed the UV version and gave me a new code to redeem on MA.

My Xbox One will not playback in UHD and they don't list it as a 4K device, are you sure of that? It also will playback DTSHD on FandangoNow and upmix it to Atmos using the Dolby Access app.
