Eh, this film was shot on 35mm film, than transfered to 2k digital video for editing and optical effects, and than tranfered back to 35mm film. A 4k UHD makes no sense for this movie unless they redid the complete post production process, which I highly doubt.

"Ichi the Killer is a 2001 Japanese crime horror film. Adapted from the manga series of the same name and directed for the screen by Takashi Miike, it was shot originally on 16mm, telecined in HD video for post production, before filmed out on 35mm inter-negative for the making of release prints. A full digital restoration of the director's cut of Ichi the Killer was undertaken by Emperor Motion Pictures in 2017. A new transfer was created in 4K resolution from a 35mm inter-negative at L'Imagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy. It was then digitally restored and colour graded in 4K resolution." |

So we can count on a French edition
![]() I'd rather get an American or English release but I'd be happy for any 4K UHD. |

I just finished viewing it. As expected, the video is somewhat on the ugly side because of the way Miike filmed it. The colors are kind of nice though and there are, of course, several striking shots. By the way, unless my player is wrong, this is only SDR.

Isn't it true why other movies have Dolby Vision? Ichi no.
example Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974, Hills Have Eyes 1977, Dog Soldiers - 16mm negativ all. |

Those films were not transferred to video and then back to film again, so I'm guessing these guys left Ichi in SDR because of the way it was produced. BTW Texas Chainsaw Massacre doesn't have a negative, it was shot on reversal film.

The only way a true restoration of Ichi the Killer could be achieved is if they could find the original 16mm pre-digital editing elements then do some composite work with the 35mm internegative for an overall cleaner presentation but who knows if anyone is truly yearning to put that much time, energy and money into such a proper restoration...if said original 16mm materials still exist in the first place.

I have seen 4K, but what disappoints me is that the film doesn't have English subtitles. Not everyone knows French and doesn't want to rely on always playing the movie and adding some external subtitles. It's aimed at French speakers. Hopefully the US version will come out later, because we can't buy this, only download it. I know Well Go USA had it, but it's silent about.
