I started out with DVD and got up to only like 60’ish of just my absolute favorites and then adopted Bluray immediately. Had around 400 blurayand decided to upgrade just my absolute favorites to UHD but then after about the 6th or 7th title I was hooked and upgrade every title I have to UHD
![]() (Edit: I did have VHS also, most of which were gifts, I only ever bought maybe 20 VHS because at the time I was spending cash more on music and books) Last edited by Phillip c. Niethe; 10-27-2024 at 02:30 PM. |

I go based on how limited something is, if it includes a limited bonus disc, booklet, slipcover, etc - I pick these up sooner rather than later. If there isn't any, it gets held off until there's a price I'm good with.
I looked at my collection and I'm close to having half as many UHDs as I do regular BDs. |

I look at review scores… if the Blu Ray received a mediocre or worse transfer and the 4k received an excellent transfer that’s an easy upgrade. Otherwise, I watch the Blu Ray and if I think the transfer still looks good then I don’t feel it’s necessary to upgrade. I’m trying to not get carried away, it’d be easy to. Also it’s not as cheap as it used to be when a Blu Ray upgrade could be as low as $3 - $5.

The correct answer is if you like the film and want to upgrade it, sell the blu-ray for market value on ebay.. You're welcome for the one and only correct answer

Don't listen to the reviews. Use Capsaholic to decide what release to get. The Usual Suspects 4k is great btw.

Buy your favorites first. If there is an issue (like the ones to avoid) then move to the next. If not in a big hurry (unless you want a ‘rare’ slipcover/steelbook) then wait for a sale. You really don’t need to go in any order, just buy what you want/like when you find the deal you want. Check different sites for best sales. Universal (GRUV) and Sony (pleaserewind) have eBay stores with coupons. Target has B2G1 free and similar sales. Boutique labels have their own sales too. Barnes and Noble puts various boutique labels on sale throughout the year. Lots of ways to save money.

UHD is the last frontier of physical media. It's largely irrelevant to me (and practically guaranteed) that I already own prior dvd and blu ray releases of just about everything that is rolling out in 4k. About 98+% of the 1200+ uhds I've purchased have been palpable, quantifiable upgrades over prior formats. As such, I scoop up anything and everything in 4k that tickles my fancy at this point, as it rolls out. Releases trickle out slowly enough on a monthly basis that there's really no need for me to prioritize much of anything. With Best Buy out of the game entirely now, and Amazon no longer price-matching on the same level as they once did, I mainly just preorder/order titles of interest through Orbitdvd, Diabolikdvd ,etc. nowadays.
It goes without saying that the usual standards of common sense, boutique reputation/track record, limited availability, competing releases, and myriad other factors come into play when I'm deciding whether I'll preorder a given title, or buy after a few trusted sources get a gander at a new transfer/master first. Luckily, a big part of the decision is already made by the studios: not every DVD movie made it onto blu-ray, and many blu-ray titles will never make it onto 4K UHD.
Other than that, I go by re-watchability to make sure my collection stays manageable. Before I upgrade a title, I ask myself if I will watch it again: Some movies are good, but you may not want to see it again necessarily. If the answer is no, then instead of upgrading the title, I will either resell it, or donate it if the resale value makes no sense, creating more space. |

Been collecting for a few decades and as I get older am slowing down with physical media purchases. At this point I would prefer to upgrade proven favorites that I grew up with or stuff in general that I just really enjoy. Even just a few years ago I was buying way too much stuff from sales, dollar stores and so forth. We don't have enough time on earth to get around to all these movies and shows. Stuff like the original TMNT live action film will go to the front of the line. More recent films with already great presentations on stream and blu I should probably pass.
