I was just wondering whether or not it would be accurate to refer to a movie as real 4K if it was shot at a resolution below 4K or on a film width with an equivalent resolution below 4K but was finalized with a 4K or higher digital intermediate. What do you guys think?
What about movies that were shot at resolutions above 4K or on a film width with an equivalent resolution that is above 4K but were finalized with a digital intermediate that is below 4K? Can they be referred to as real 4K? |

FYI, I'm asking because I've created new thumbnail designs whose purpose is to indicate the specifications and quality of movie clips. However, I don't know whether or not I'm being disingenuous by referring to certain content as "Real 4K" depending on the original resolution in which it was shot and the resolution of the digital intermediate via which it was finalized.
What say ye? ![]() ![]() ![]() As you can see, the thumbnail refers to BR2049 as "Real 4K," because it has a 4K digital intermediate, even though it was shot in only 3.4K. |

You're supposed to take the average. If a movie was shot at 8K but finished at 2K, it's actually 5K. But if a movie was shot at 3.4K but finished at 4K, it's actually 3.7K. This is the secret they're not telling the public. #thetruthisoutthere #iwanttobelieve

I say who cares. I mean seriously, you can use those to your heart's content, but it tells you nothing of the PQ itself. |

In my opinion the resolution of the DI is the deciding factor.
I say this because many movies are shot with several different cameras and resolutions being utilized throughout the production. If a movie was shot 30-40% on Arri Alexa in 2.8K with the rest shot in 6.5K on Alexa 65 and then even some scenes shot on film or 1080p on a 5D or even GoPro thrown into the mix then what resolution is that movie? I'd say if such a movie was finished with a 2K DI it's a 2K resolution movie. If it was finished with a 4K DI it is a 4K resolution movie. Regardless of the source resolution of the different cameras used. |
