Default Dead PSP

My nephew's PSP is dead. I think I figured out what happened, but haven't been able to find out if there is anything that can be done about it. What happens is that when you turn it on, nothing happens. The green light comes on and then after a short while the light goes off. I did a little research and found out that he probably powered it off when it was doing a firmware update. I heard that there really isn't anything you can do short of replacing the motherboard, which costs almost as much as a new PSP. He already has a new one now, but I figured if there was a way that it could be fixed cheaply, he could have a spare or his brother can have it, since the other one they have is in bad shape. Kids just don't take very good care of their things.
