Default Favorite TV streaming service and why?

I currently have DTV. We don't get a lot of rain in Dallas, but it bugs me when it goes out due to weather. Also, they are compressing the PQ (as do all cable/satellite companies). Some channels look great, some look kinda crappy.

Do any of the streaming TV services provide better PQ (1080p)? Did I hear DTV Now's new beta is (or looks like) 1080p?

I would want something that works well with my LG TV. I'm thinking of getting either a Roku or Apple 4k tv for the cord-cutting service.

Which TV streaming service (Hulu, Sling, Vue, DTV Now, YoutubeTV) do you guys prefer, and why?

Thanks!

DIRECTV NOW claims that they’ll have 4K this year, but they also claimed they’d have DVR much sooner, and that’s still on the horizon. If those things pan out, they might become the best choice. That’s the only one I’ve used on my TV so far (I’ve since canceled it because I can just use my parents’ cable credentials to unlock pretty much any individual channel app). It was pretty good, and has gotten better since it first debuted in late 2016.

Started using DIRECTV NOW a few months ago. Pretty good at 1080p. Got invited to test the DVR beta on my new FIRE TV.

I'm guessing just a few channels are 1080p, right? How can you tell for sure if 1080 or 720?

Currently it’s Netflix but when season 8 of GoT starts next year, it will be HBO GO.

i currently have dish network. being satellite, it does have it's issues with bad weather, but it's usually only if there's a lot of electrical activity (lightning).

but yesterday i was doing research on various streaming services (amazon prime, hulu, netflix). their monthly/yearly costs are WAY less than what i pay now. the only "negative" about it is i would have to use a secondary device, like a ps4 or apple tv (both, of which, i have) because my current tv isn't a smart tv. but that's not a big deal at all since i already use both of them pretty regularly.

i'd want to keep my local channels as i still watch them quite often, so i'd have to get an antenna. but, again, not a big deal since they're not all that expensive. and it's just a one-time cost.

I'm using PS Vue and for the most part, I'm pleased. I have the $74.99 ultra package and I get 93 channels (including Epix, HBO and Showtime) . It also includes cloud DVR.

Dish Network has lots of great choices in their free "on demand" section. They recently put up a lot of older Disney Channel shows not on Netflix/Hulu and I am living.

I use Netflix on my PS4, but not very much. There's not a lot on there that I watch; it's basically there for Fuller House and the occasional, "I'm bored, what's on?" moment. If they'd produce more stuff like "The Rain" and "Cargo," I'd be watching more often. There's no way I could cut Dish Network and go 100% streaming, though. Not anytime soon, at least.

the only thing that's really keeping me from doing it, is my mom. she's a big fan of most of the stuff on cbs. and currently, hulu (even plus w/live tv) doesn't offer every cbs show. and her favorite show is one of them. so i know she wouldn't be a fan of it. and i don't want to have to get cbs all-access just so she can watch a few shows.

i want to pare it down to as few things as possible. but what i'm thinking is go with hulu plus w/live tv and then get an antenna for all the local channels. and since the coax is already run, i wouldn't have to do that; just mount the antenna on the roof.

my dish bill is currently $133/month. that comes out to $1570/year! and going with hulu plus, it comes out to only $480/year ($40/month). hell, i could get amazon prime, hulu plus, AND netflix for less than half of what i currently pay for dish.

and as i stated earlier, i don't have a smart tv so i'd have to use either my ps4 or my apple tv (which i don't mind at all since i use both of them quite a bit anyway). and my mom already has a smart tv (i made sure the one she bought a few years back, was), she'd be good to go, already. but even if it wasn't, i could move my apple tv downstairs for her (she ain't gettin' my ps4 ).

also, going with an external antenna, it's just a one-time cost, so no monthly fees there. and i can even get a dvr for ~$35 with no monthly fee, either.

I love Sling. Hardly any problems and very reasonable.

Yeah, I hear you. My parents are one of the reasons we don't switch at all. They do complain about the Dish bill, but I'm sure they'd be lost without a dedicated service. The other reason is that I have yet to find another streaming device other than my PS4 that I like in terms of quality. The PS4 is slowly getting new apps, so I'll test them as they become available. I had a Roku Ultra once before, and solved the lip sync issue, but the quality of video from YouTube didn't seem as good as it does on my PS4. I also noticed other Roku apps (AMC, CW, etc) that were just poor quality and never got better as the video went on. I tried an Apple TV once as well, and I believe it was the best one so far in terms of quality on Netflix/YouTube, but I never got to try other apps before my brother convinced me to stick with the PS4 for streaming. If everything worked out in the future, I could possibly see going full streaming. Packages will add up fast but probably still cost less each month than Dish or Comcast.

My family subscribes to a few streaming services, and they are mostly not worth it. They are Amazon Prime, Hulu, Starz and Shudder.

We watch a few shows on Amazon Prime and a few on Hulu. We hardly watch Starz.

Shudder is really good. If you like horror movies, I can see how Shudder would be absolutely worth the 5 dollars a month. The content on Shudder does not suck. It has a slick-looking website and you can watch there if you want.

We had Netflix, but basically never watched it, so we canceled it. Netflix sucked. Bad TV shows. Bad movies.

Nothing beats DVD/Blu-ray. You get exactly what you want, and no monthly bill.

But if I had to pick a streaming service, Shudder wins hands down. It is an excellent service.

The problem with a streaming service is, you get a bill every month, even if you don't watch much on it. That is mostly wasting money.

omg. My mom just uses the Dish to watch Lifetime or LMN. I can't. My younger bro uses it for the sports channels. I barely watch as I download most of my shows or watch on Hulu because I always forget to watch live or DVR.

Streaming: Amazon Prime (Fire box) -- have Prime for the shipping, but I get a lot of use out of the streaming side -- just finished season 3 of 'Shaun the Sheep' and working my way through 'Dark Shadows' (although I own the dvds) HBO-Go will return with Game of Thrones.

Time Warner/Spectrum (still pre-digital conversion) -- cable, internet, phone bundle would like to cut the cord, but decent internet is a must and there's no (yet) other option. Quality is poor to bad with occasional awful. The phone I don't use.

I have discontinued using Chromecast (1st and 2nd gens) -- no longer a need
