the way to start would be to get a spreadsheet or some paper and google your districts whether that's for your state government or state representatives to the US congress. Make a note of who's running for each district by which party. You can obviously do this for your local county or city commissioners as well. Then just do your research, some websites will say they have a bipartisan breakdown of each candidate, but take that with a grain of salt. Best thing I'd do is go to their particular webpages and see exactly what they say they stand for. Make your notes, and keep reading everything you can. Essentially you're just making your own "reliable site".
