This actually is a difficult choice, to be honest.
I'll say this much about Scott's prowess as a visual filmmaker -- the dude is so gifted in that regard, that a film as average as 'Alien: Covenant' still produced imagery that will forever remain in my subconscious forever (that sequence with David wiping out the engineer's home planet was visually jaw-dropping). However, I ended up picking James Cameron. I know it's hard to separate visuals from the quality of content between both filmmakers -- but considering I feel Cameron has a much consistently stronger body of work to go along with his equally impressive visual talents as a filmmaker, I just have to go with him. Not to mention, and I don't mean this as a disrespect to Scott, but his angles and compositions alone wouldn't be enough. As great as 'Blade Runner' and 'Alien' are visually, who do we all think about with those films and their visuals? Syd Mead, Jean 'Moebius' Giraud, and HR Giger come to mind before Scott does. Whereas with Cameron, that dude literally designed a ton of memorable elements in his own films. He did the PowerLoader, the Alien Queen, the original T-800 design, The M577 APC in Aliens, the Smart Guns in Aliens, etc, etc. Cameron's skill in terms of capturing scale and scenery is every bit great in his own right, but his ability to also compliment those visuals with his own design sensibilities is something you just do not see from other filmmakers. It's why I still contest that from strictly a technical and visual side, James Cameron is the most important filmmaker in the history of its medium in those aspects. He's above the rest, IMO. |

I presume this isn't very popular thing to say, but Cameron is one of the most overrated directors around. He has a couple of interesting movies (the first Terminator and The Abyss (long cut)), but that's about it. True Lies showed how mediocre he can be when he doesn't have robots and futuristic set designs to play with. IMHO, of course. I mostly wish he had produced more movies for his more talented ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days, Point Break).
OTOH, Ridley Scott is a true artist. |
