Default Got Mahler?

Mahler is my favorite post-romantic composer and SF Symphony/Michael Tilson Thomas is recording his cycle for multichannel SACD release. I'm sure many of you are aware that all the symphonies except 8 have been released--a few have won awards--as well as Das Lied von der Erde and Das klagende Lied. I was not aware of those last two until last year, but they are also recorded at Davies Symphony Hall and impeccably produced like the symphonies.

Anyway, I highly recommend this cycle. MTT and SFS are very enjoyable and the compositions are worth exploring on every level whether you're new to Mahler or familiar with his work. They sound darn good.

Default Mahler's 9th

Last year my wife and I went to a NYC concert where this was played. Much as I love the work this performance did not chill the back teeth as I had hoped.

Prior to the concert we familiarised ourselves with the work with Berstein's interpretation, Rattle's and also the excellent DVD with ABBADO.

Which suggests you have to be in the right frame of mind or else concerts, discs etc are a waste of time. The advantage of discs is you can choose the right moment in the comfort of your own home. A great concert surpasses any canned event in the home. Problem is those great concerts have been few and far between for me

Default Mahler "Resurrection" 3-D Sound Reality Release

I am glad to announce that I am finally on the last stage of production of Mahler
Symphony No. 2 in C minor "Resurrection" performed by Robert-Schumann-Philharmonic and conducted by Oleg Caetani.
Source material for this project was originally recorded by one of the greatest European Audio Engineer Michael Reznich at 24 bit / 96k resolution.

This is my thirst attempt to apply my 3-D sound reality mixing concept previously developed using sampled and synthesized instruments to real classical acoustic recording.
The disc will feature 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and should be available for preorder by the end of the month.

Finally, the SFS Mahler cycle on multichannel SACD will be completed with the release of symphony No. 8 and the Adagio from No. 10, on August 25. Thus completes one of the most rewarding cycles I have collected, though no subsequent release rose to the level of the first title in the series, the award winning symphony No. 6.

I "stumbled" on my way to buying some of the MTT / SFSO SACDs: I purchased Ben Zander's Mahler 1 with the Philharmonia on Telarc SACD. I'm quite taken with the accompanying lecture CD. That's a big thumb on the scale in favor of the Zanders for me for each symphony for which he's done a recording, which is the entire cycle except the 7 and the 8.

I think I'll even get the Zander 4 and 9 CDs with lecture before the (pricier) MTT / SFSO SACDs.

When I bought symphony #2 the rear speakers sound almost as loud as the front and it just destroyed the whole experience for me. I didn't want to have the orchestra behind me too. Did anyone else have the same issue? I have 7.1

I was going to look at other recordings. Seems that this is a transfer to blu-ray from some older format. I'd like to see a BD that was recorded recently and not a old transfer.

You should try "Acoustic Reality Experience" titles, my Mahler project is "3D Sound Reality" concept recording similar to Tacet "Real Surround" recordings on DVD-A.
The source material for our classical collection recorded at 24/96k resolution earlier in the beginning of the decade, however modern mixing techniques followed evolution of audio technology allow me to produce a greater presentation of this material compare to older dvd-a and sacds.

Unfortunately, I've recently learned that the M2 Zander did indeed record will not be released.

Has anyone purchased the new EuroArts re-releases on BD of Abbado's Mahler's performances with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra?

The 3 is available now: http://www.amazon.com/Claudio-Abbado...5438260&sr=1-1

And the 2 and 6 street this coming Tuesday:

http://www.amazon.com/Mahler-Symphon...5438260&sr=1-2

http://www.amazon.com/Mahler-Symphon...5438260&sr=1-3

A little pricey for me but I definitely want 2 and 3 (I prefer Mahler's programmatic symphonies far more than the absolutes) after having rented the DVDs of all of these performances via Netflix. Will likely wait a few months or longer for used pricing to come down (although special interest titles such as these don't fall as fast as mainstream movie BDs).

Interesting difference of opinion on the sound quality of the Abbado Mahler 2 BD from site reviewer J. Kauffman versus that of a site reader who communicated with the label about some SQ issues he had with the disc. Apparently there were some technical issues with this title.

Nice: A couple of new live concert Mahler BDs, these from the International Mahler Festival earlier this year in Leipzig. Chailly does the 2 and 8 with the Gewandhausorchester:

Interesting turn of events promulgating a bump.

In the terrible wake of Abbado's passing, Chailly has been handed the Lucerne Festival Orchestra baton. Emotionally enough, they have chosen to complete Abbado's Mahler cycle by recording the 8. I think this is Chailly's third high rez media release of the 8.
