Always heard about Cuphead and I've seen some of the gameplay footage. Iit looks a bit hard. Would this be a good recommendation for a guy who's interested but ambivalent towards platformers?

I know it's had major props given for an Indy title but surprised its taken this bloody long for a PS4 release given the much higher userbase of PlayStation l.

keep in mind that you're not going to breeze through it, it will take time practice

Microsoft funded the game, so understandable I guess

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. Well, i guess they must have fulfilled the obligations of exclusivity then because i think MS have like Sony in the past funded such games that later go multiplatform. Maybe the PS5 should have a proper 4K version. Kinda like MS is doing with Ori. 4K/120fps.

Great get for PlayStation owners! If I didn't already have it on Switch I would pick it up. The game is hard as balls though! Like, chuck your controller through your TV hard!

Maybe this means Ori and the Blind Forest will soon follow?

More than that. MS owns the IP. Chances were that this would likely never come to PS4 so this release is quite a surprise

I was literally thinking the other day when rumors about this were coming out that Gears 4 and Cuphead were the only two games that I feel like I missed by not buying both consoles this generation. I loved Gears back on 360 so I had a history with it, but Cuphead just seemed like a singular work of art and love of craft. So, I'll be happy to support it, even if I suck at it.

The trailer looks pretty interesting. Yeah I had never seen gameplay before. I might get it and try the lowest difficulty since I'm pretty bad at hard platformers.

You should probably steer clear of it, then. The game has only one difficulty setting: rage-inducing. No checkpoints. No "easy" level. No consistency in the patterns you have to memorize, only constant randomization at key points. It makes the original Contra look like a walk in the park.

I played it for hours and eventually just gave up. I don't like having to spend two hours playing the same level over and over again before I can finally beat it.

There's a trophy called Complete the game on Normal and another called Complete the game on Expert. These aren't difficulties?

Same. I love the controls, love the art direction...but I kinda suck at games. Can't beat it

noirjunkie meant there's no easy difficulty

which isn't entirely true, there is simple mode, but you can't beat the final part of game with simple mode. so you can use it as a practice tool maybe

You can't collect any of the items you need to progress from even the earliest levels of the game when playing the boss fights on "simple" (which make up the bulk of the levels), so yes, it's really nothing other than a practice tool.

I saw Cuphead on PS Store for 9.99 I think not long ago. I wanted the game for a long time but it was on XB. Then I forgot about it, but what an incredible classic cartoon art style the game has. I want to play it for that.

Are there endless continues?

You can continue, die or reset the level as much as you want. It's a fantastic game.

That is good news, thank you. I thought maybe it was one of those "3 continues and it's start all over" games of the 80s.

Thankfully, it's not. There's nothing worse than an 80s nostalgia game. They bring EVERYTHING we hated about games back then. Obviously for kids who didn't live those days lol.

Cuphead is a great game. It has a reputation for its difficulty and to be honest, it's not that hard. It's just easy to die. It's literally a case of memorising the patterns and you get an infinite amount of retries. Kind of a "crank up the music and chill" sort of thing. The soundtrack is awesome!

I hope you give it a blast.
