Default Writers Strike: Warner not doing so hot...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080109/.../warnerbros_dc

Quote:
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Up to 1,000 employees on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank could be laid off anytime after Friday as a result of the Hollywood writers strike.

The studio distributed legally mandated warning notices on November 12, five days after the Writers Guild of America walkout began, stating that recipients could be subject to layoff after 60 days. The notices represent the first concrete sign that the strike could trigger massive job cuts across Hollywood.

See more here.

Just leaves them more time for BD transfers. This isn't just WB, either. The writer's strike is effecting all of Hollywood.

This is becuase of the WGA strike....expect to see more of this from other studios if the strike continues. This also won't happen to WB if it does continue. Should have no real effect on BLU

It wont affect blu-ray production, since you dont need writers to encode a disc, etc.

Also it wont affect their 2008 movie lineup, as all movies already have a script, plus there are massive amounts of scripts already written for other movies.

If placing in writers contracts, that they get a cut of disc sales, would you pay an extra say... 5 bucks per disc to support that? I probably would.

Nope. The companies and the writers can work that out amongst themselves but I'm not paying for it and neither should you. Every industry has these kinds of issues... you can't just force it to the consumer all the time.

It is sad for the non union workers with families getting hit with this. I hope the writers and the studio owners think this is all worth it.

While not directly related, I would venture to say that this probably will have a positive effect for BD production, and may contribute to exactly how Paramount and Universal respond to Warner's BD exclusivity announcement.

With the studios all experiencing serious financial reprecussions from the WGA strike, I'm sure their senior executives are looking to maximize all possible revenue streams, across their entire organizations. Especially with the HD market now almost totally on the BD side, that puts even more pressure on the Paramount and Universal holdouts to start (or re-start) BD production and get that money in the door, asap.

Conversely, there's even more pressure to sell as much of their existing HD-DVD stock as well (obviously they would want to do that anyway)... so I'm sure this is all being factored into whatever reponses their corporate lawyers and PR departments are coming up with... that we're all eagerly awaiting.

Not much of a surprise that the Warner writers aren't done striking. Only one studio has accepted the WGA deal. But that studio only produces one of the latenight shows. So that isn't a win at all.
