Default Rank Christopher Nolan films

Nolan is my favorite current director alongside David Fincher excluding Martin Scorsese and Spielberg. I am a fan of his films since 2008.

The Dark Knight *****

Inception ****

Batman Begins ****

Memento ****

The Dark Knight Rises ****

The Prestige ****

Interstellar *** 4/4

Dunkirk *** 3/4

Insomnia *** 3/4

Following *** 1/2

Tenet ***

What's your rating of his films?

Big fan of Nolan, too. I think being robbed of seeing Tenet in theaters was a big bummer for me in 2020, but glad I got to watch it twice at home so far and pause/rewind if I need to (and I NEEDED to.)

Looks like we all have very similar rankings so far:

The Prestige
The Dark Knight
Memento
Batman Begins

Inception
Interstellar
Tenet
Insomnia

The Dark Knight Rises
Dunkirk
Following

I've only seen Dunkirk and Tenet once each, and I have a feeling they'll move once I rewatch and reappraise them. I legitimately had a very hard time understanding dialogue in Tenet and would like to watch it with subtitles soon. Anyway, I have the above list in tiers, but I still think even the weakest three are very good and above average. The top tier are all time favourites for me.

Christopher Nolan is my favorite modern director, so he's 5 stars in my book. What my ranking displays is rewatchability:

Batman Begins
Inception
Interstellar
The Prestige
The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight Rises
Dunkirk
Memento
Insomnia
Tenet (I have only seen this once)

This probably changes a little bit each time I do it. I mostly like Nolan's work, I just get turned off by the cult of worship around him.

01. Interstellar (2014)
02. The Dark Knight (2008)
03. Batman Begins (2005)
04. Insomnia (2002)
05. Inception (2010)
06. Tenet (2020)
07. Memento (2000)
08. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
09. Dunkirk (2017)
10. The Prestige (2006)

Haven't seen Following yet.

I don't want to start an argument over this, but this is mostly incorrect. Pre-TDKR which was Nolan's peak, there was a lot more people liking Nolan at least as far as i remember in real life and old sites and YouTube channels i used to browse but for a good reason, he did his best movies in the span of 8 years.

However, The Dark Knight Rises, Tenet and Interstellar have been met with criticism and lack of universal praise like Inception and TDK. They were liked sure, but neither of the three was compared to classics or put in the best list of decades. They're flawed films.

If you're upset about the so-called "Nolanites" you are living in the past XD

I remember the old comicbook.com article regarding Whedon fans and Nolan fans lol, IGN talked about it in a YouTube video.

I've no interest in re-watching the movies below. Maybe Tenet with subtitles.

  • Batman Begins
  • Tenet
  • Following
  • The Dark Knight Rises

His fans sent death threats to critics who negatively reviewed The Dark Knight Rises. & Nolan defended them as, “passionate.”

Insomnia is a good movie (albeit a re-make of someone else’s work), because it was made before Nolan went up his own ass & started making films which made stupid people feel smart.
