Warner Bros Little Shop of Horrors 4K UHD (1986)

Quote:
Meanwhile, the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Boston held a special screening of Little Shop of Horrors (1986) last night, with director Frank Oz in attendance. In a Q&A after the screening, Oz revealed that the film is coming to 4K Ultra HD next year from Warner Bros. And in fact, I can indeed confirm that this is true, per our own industry sources here at The Bits. Special thanks to Bits reader David A. for the report from the screening!

One of my all-time favorites! Almost put the Blu-ray in the October rotation again this year, but kept thinking that it has to be coming to 4K soon. Glad that is indeed the case. “It’s Suppertime.”

Oh I can't wait! Just watched this the other day while drawing a birthday card for my sister (of Audrey II in his Maxwell House container) thinking I wished this was in 4k!

I do prefer the theatrical ending, this last time I watched was the first time I saw the original ending and didn't like it as much, probably nostalgic thing.

Cool.
I'd also really like the movie soundtrack to get remastered.

I love this movie. Looking forward to a 4k.
I also prefer the theatrical ending.
I think the 'original' ending is freaking awesome, due to all the work put into it. I have a lot of respect that ending. The original stage production ended similarly as well, so it's more true to the "source material". It's just that the pace of the movie is much, much better in the theatrical cut. I feel the longer ending halts the whole movie in its tracks.

I absolutely agree, though the Blu-ray version of the "Don't Feed the Plants" finale is actually an assembly cut where they just threw in everything shot for it as a treat for the fans. The version of that scene shown to test audiences was way shorter and paced better.

I wonder now that the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink version has been widely available if Oz will recut it to how he originally approved it. I also wonder if he'd be willing to restore the full "Meek Shall Inherit" number. When he removed that, he ended up having to remove and reshoot things that tied into Seymour's headspace from that scene.

Either way, I'm super excited for this release!

Yes, I recall that it was a "kitchen sink recut". This version was actually released on DVD back in... 2000? 2001? However, it was recalled rather quickly. I remember spending 5 weeks going to every store I could get to within 100 miles in search of a copy still on the shelf somewhere. Never found it.
It was more heartbreaking to me than even the time I loaned my DVD of "This is Spinal Tap" with the commentary by Spinal Tap... and not getting it back. And I never watched it hahah
I never found a copy, so getting the blu-ray release was a no-brainer for me the very SECOND I learned it was getting released. Even now, I'm so happy that it's available.

This is such a fantastic special effects accomplishment. I can't believe, even today, how well the effects hold up. I know they would film scenes at half speed, so the singers (basically, Rick Moranis) had to sing at half-speed to match the footage, which was then sped up in post so that Audrey II could talk so quickly.
The most spectacular representation of this is during the scene where Audrey II is convincing Seymour that Steve Martin (Scrivello) has to die...
During the dialog "He's so nasty treating her rough."
"YEAH! Smacking her around and always talking so tough!"
"You need blood and he's got more than enough." - You can see the veins popping from Seymour's neck, and the lip-syncing of Audrey II is flawless.

Very, very few movies using CGI have come close to this level of precision and realism.
On top of that, it's one of my most favorite musicals, so there's that.

That's great to hear!

Now I wonder why Warner Bros. had never gotten the streaming and digital rights for this film here in Canada for quite a long time probably some licensing issues here in my country perhaps. I did gotten the director's cut on DVD from Walmart 8 years ago, its still the best musical comedy film ever made.
