For some reason, horror movies are often subjected to terrible upscaled blu-rays and I figured it might be a good idea to create an as complete as possible list of all Blu-Rays that are not actually HD so that people can make educated decisions regarding their purchases.

I believe both the German & Spanish releases of Alligator 1 & 2 are all upscaled.

I was going to mention 28 Days Later, but I guess it doesn't qualify because although most of the movie was shot on standard-def digital video, it was printed on 35mm film, so the Blu-ray isn't technically an upscale.

(And the final sequence was shot in 35mm, plus a flashback in Super 8mm.)

Since the final sequence is indeed in HD, I don't think this one counts.

I would add the Japan blu-ray release of "Frankenstein: The True Story."

Quite possibly the worst looking Blu-ray transfer I have in my collection. Not only is it an upscale, but it appears it's from a video source (it was shot on film except for the James Mason "present day" introductions) that's been time corrected from a PAL source.

I agree, 28 Days Later is intentional that way.

I had no idea Howling V (or III or VI, for that matter) was on Blu. Shame it's a terrible disc, but Howling V is actually a decent movie, considering its amateurish acting and low (no?) budget.

I am pretty sure a couple of The Prophecy sequels are also from SD masters. You might want to add Near Dark to this list, it might as well be an upscaled transfer.

Can anyone confirm regarding Prophecy? Near Dark is not upscaled so I don't think it would be appropriate to add it.

The Prophecy: Forsaken sequel is definitely upscaled.

Confirmed upconverts:

Prophecy, The
I can easily believe this, as the BD looks awful. But can you tell me where it was 'confirmed'?

Checked it myself, while I'm no expert, this is without a shadow of a doubt an upscale. All the typical upscale elements are there (the grain structure, the thick line at the bottom, the edges etc).

I'm not sure what to make of this one, Uprising is HD and Forsaken was shot back to back and while the quality is questionable, there are no clear tell-tale signs that this is indeed an upscale. I might order the blu-ray myself to verify this before adding it if that's okay?

I don't think The Prophecy movies are upscaled. Just horrible transfers.

The fifth one the verdict's out on, but the first three are definitely upscales. Compare them to the HD versions on iTunes and it becomes quite apparent if it wasn't before.

This is true, at least for the first 2. I had the dvds and now have the 2-pack and they are bad transfers, but are in HD. A few scenes in each look really good, and many scenes in each look like complete shit, but they are not upscales by any means. Nor is Near Dark. Over-done DNR does make an upscale! Never saw the iTunes versions or anything besides the dvds. Does upscaling include HD streams now?

See the line at the bottom and top? You will never get that from a true HD-master, that's a classic side-effect from upscaling.

Part 2 is definitely not an upscale. An HD master was only struck for that film a few years ago. Up until then, all we had was the non-anamorphic transfer from the DVD. Even if you were to buy The Prophecy Collection on DVD from Echo Bridge, Part 2 was still in non-anamorphic widescreen.
