I'm so glad they're getting into J-Horror. This is a really good one. I know The Great Owl will be very pleased by this too, I've hard him mention this one a few times

Little known fact: this was filmed entirely in Egypt.

It's Kairo.

Not that hard to get it correct.

Fantastic news. Kaïro is one of the true greats of Asian horror. Crossing my fingers that Uzumaki and/or Noroi, the Curse eventually make an appearance.

I wasn't crazy about this flick this first time I watched it (during the J-horror boom), but on revisit a few years later, I sort of frickin loved it. That's why unless I absolute loathe a film, I usually give it a second go at some point.

First time I think I've seen Uzumaki brought up. I love that flick, as well as the manga. Noroi is great as well, though I fear both these titles are probably long shots for releases. I'd love to be wrong though!

Whoa!

Pulse (Kairo)
is my favorite of the Japanese horror films, and it's quite possibly my favorite horror film of the 2000s.

Merry Christmas to The Great Owl!

To all of you people who haven't seen this movie, prepare to be freaked out.

I was fortunate to see Pulse (Kairo) on the big screen at an indie theater here in Atlanta back when it was first released in stateside. It was an immersive and spooky experience when seen in that setting. I'm confident that Arrow will hook us up with the best home video version yet.

OMG... I got shivers after seeing this news. Can't wait for this. This movie has incredible atmosphere, probably my favorite of this director after Cure.

I've seen the remake...and thought it was a joke...

Hopefully this film interests me more.

it's available for streaming in hulu. so really... does criterion possibly only have digital rights. that doesn't even make sense.

the three titles I want most from criterion are onibaba jigoku and cure. I don't know what the hold up is because they are all available for streaming and we're all released on dvd. so they have had home video rights on the past. unless, japan and usa being in the same region is preventing it from going forward.

love pulse. love kiyoshi kurosawa.

Anyone that's seen the remake, can you compare it to the original? I can't really comprehend how any of it would even work if they set it here, since it's so tied to social trends in Japan.

Sure. The original is a spooky, atmospheric, emotionally draining horror film with a surprisingly deft, delicate touch.

The remake is a teenybopper jumpscare factory with ugly bald guy ghosts and old ladies screaming about the dangers of Wi-Fi. Which somehow got two even worse direct-to-video sequels.
