Despite his limited screen presence, I thought he was great. I really can't want to see him cut loose in the Batman film.

That's a big nope from me. Liked his slicked back hair, laugh and mouth tattoo on his hand. Other than that, I found him to be a bad interpretation of "Mr. J". His voice sounded like Nixon and he acted like a lost puppy trying to find his owner when it came to Harley. I'd give him a 4/10 overall. It was disappointing because I normally enjoy Leto's performances.

I was very intrigued and coming out of the film I felt really excited about having Leto show up in the upcoming DC projects. And for as little as he was in there, that's a good sign.
I look at him sort of in the same way as I did with Wonder Woman in BvS, that is, basically a glorified cameo that stole every scene that incorporated said character.

The problem with his performance is that there's so little of it! Just as you're trying to assess your feelings about him, it cuts to another scene. There's definite potential from what I saw but yeah, it's way too early to tell. I've seen people ranking him alongside the other Jokers already and I don't think that's fair.

Bring on the solo Batman film.

Yeah, his screen time was lacking. I think Jared Leto is great for the role, I just think the script didn't allow his potential to show.

I like that he, like Eisenberg's Lex Luthor, was an updated version of the character.

Voted he was Okay.

Not enough screen time to really make a full judgment on the character. But I did like the balance between crazy/funny/psycho. Big improvement over the Ledger Joker who was 95% psycho and 5% funny

I'm glad you said it.

Ledger's Joker to me never seemed calculating enough to pull off the kind of large scale schemes and manipulation that were attributed to him.

Time will tell if Leto's joker is, but so far nothing they've shown leans me one way or the other.

Apparently, there was quite a bit of Joker footage that ended up getting cut out, as confirmed by Leto himself. From what I read, his relationship with Harley was originally portrayed as a little more abusive, and I guess the studio chickened out and had some of that stuff removed. For example,
[Show spoiler]when Harley gets aboard the helicopter originally her and Joker got into an argument, and Joker pushed her from the chopper trying to kill her. In the finished film, the argument is gone and it's edited to look like he pushed her from the chopper in order to save her just before it was hit by the missile.

I'm hoping the Blu-ray will have an extended cut with a lot of that missing Joker footage restored.

well what we got of that scene was much better than what you just described.

Did I like him? Very much so. But I'm not yet ready to say that he beats Heath for the definitive live-action portrayal of the character.

I thought he was okay. It's hard for me to form an opinion on him considering what little screen time he had.

In his limited screen time he was one of the few bright spots of the movie. Can't wait to see more of him in the future.

Michael24 - the helicopter scene you described is what I had thought was going to play out in the scene and I read no spoilers beforehand. I would've preferred that it play out that way, would've been more interesting.

I don't know why.

I get that Joker is abusive, and their relationship is ****ed up.

But I don't buy that he would actually try to murder her for being rude or whatever just moment after he went to such crazy lengths to get her back.

I think that would have undermined all of the stuff they included in the movie about how insanely connected to her he was.

For the amount of time he had. It was ok. Will be interesting what direction they go with him in the future.

I thought he did a great job. He put his own spin on the character which was enough to differentiate it from previous iterations. Most importantly he blended well with the Joker/Harley toxic relationship of the animated series and comics while making it lifelike. I think this version of Joker has a lot more work to do because not only does it have to balance a relationship and backstory with Harley (never been done on screen before) he has to come across as a believable adversary for the current version of Batman (Ben Affleck) and the world they have and will create for him in the future films and DCU. I think if they do decide to bring both Joker and Harley into Affleck's films (which I'm so hoping they will) then we will really be able to judge how well Jarod Leto's Joker is. I try to refrain from comparing him to Ledger or Nicholson because I feel each time the Joker is introduced now it's more about fitting in with the style of film world they have created around him. Nicholson set the bar really high early on so I know every actor will be giving it his all when portraying him, but it's a question of whether I can believe it in the setting of the film, if that makes sense.

We only really get a glimpse of him in Suicide Squad which is about what I expected of him. People are complaining that they wanted more of him in the movie but honestly, David Ayer really just put him in there as fan service because Joker really doesn't have much to do with the Suicide Squad at all. If he put more of him in it, then it will start to take away from the premise of the film which is the actual characters of the SS team. I think he (Ayer) incorporated just the right amount of Joker to peak interest, give us a glimpse of the Harley backstory and to just add that extra side element to the film to help break it up. He has done the right thing and has created enough buzz and wet the taste buds so that fans will be wanting more and by the time he appears in the next DCU film, fans will be craving for it.

Overall I really liked Leto's performance. He came across as a complete psychopath and someone who will do anything to get what he wants. And that is absolutely the core of the Joker. The appearance is only a minor in the grand scheme of things. The real question is whether or not I could buy the crazy, and I did!
