Anyone here made the switch to 100% digital? I'm about 80% physical to 20% digital. I'm thinking about going digital for all mainstream and just physical for boutique and lesser known stuff. I'm very intrigued by Kaleidescape as its supposed to be even better than physical media but the cost is very high so I might stick to Itunes for now as the quality is quite good for streaming

my physical media is all digital.
For me kaliedecape is something I would not want even if I could afford it. The systems are neat but significantly over priced and just don't have value for the price. They have gone out of business before and if they do again thier customers will be up a creek without a paddle. I read about them but I've never wanted one of their systems. I would certainly go all in with iTunes before a K system. Last edited by bhampton; 11-02-2021 at 06:33 PM. |

I'm all digital with iTunes.
Probably the best decision I've made as far as flim collecting goes. So much money saved, so much space saved, and so much convenience gained, and 4K iTunes looks nearly identical to a 4K disc. |

Hold on to your physical media even if you have the digital version of the movie. You never know what the future will hold in the case of cancel culture. Especially with the older James Bond movies. They could easily remove or tweak a scene. I have a lot of digital movies but will never sell off the physical copy. Even a movie like The Godfather can be tweaked in the future.

I've been all digital since October 2018 as in I haven't purchased any physical releases since then. I have gotten some physical copies in that time via Disney Movie Insiders redemptions but those were solely to acquire the digital copy. I still own some physicals but have slowly been upgrading those either as I acquire them for cheap on digital or they get upgraded to 4K.

Made the decision around 7 years ago and sold off all my old blu-rays while the value was still good. I don't miss them AT ALL. Space is at a premium at my house and I do not miss staring at walls and walls of discs. Now, the world has changed a bit since then. Discount iTunes gift cards are extinct, digital code prices have gone up, etc. But I still wouldn't have changed a thing. I cannot IMAGINE having to sit through ads or FBI warnings or checking for scratches anymore. Just two clicks and I am in my movie or tv show. Boom--done. Same for video games. If my son leaves his Switch on the bus or loses it, we just have to replace the cost of the system. Just like a smartphone, login to the new system and download the games again. If there were cartridges in the lost travel case? GONE FOREVER. Yeah, no re-selling which sucks, but just do your due diligence, wait for sales, and buy discount gift cards from warehouse stores. PS5--same deal. Save $100 and there's good sales on PSN every month. I have a huge backlog I'll never get through. Jump-in, you won't regret it. ![]() |

I already posted but wanted to add that my kids expressly forbid me getting rid of any of my discs. They like them and they sort of belong to the family rather that just me.
In terms of clutter ect... It's not an issue in my case. I own a large home with plenty of storage space and keep the movies alphabetized and the older copies in storage. So even if I started buying virtual movies I couldn't ever go all "digital" |

Most of my collection has been digital copy redemptions and I think i've only purchased five 4K movies off Itunes
1. Blade Runner 2. Blade Runner 2049 3. Birds Of Prey 4. Nobody 5. The Addams Family 2019 and I'm surprised at how good they actually look, they were all $10 or less so the savings was definitely there thanks to cheap charts. I do purchase quite a few tv shows from Itunes that are not on Blu-Ray always for under $20-$10 a season so the cost savings is great. I'll have to see how it goes but October was brutal on the wallet for Physical media. One of my few complaints with using the apple tv 4K on my main H/T system and 4K firesticks or apple apps directly on my upstairs tv is there is no cross play syncing. I like to go into the library and play titles from there but if I start on the apple tv my firestick doesn't keep up and will not resume from the same spot, neither will the apple tv app. I have to be using the watch now section in order for that to work properly and I don't get a checkmark if I finish an episode of a show on the firestick but other then that its been great and quite the space & $ saver although I'm not looking forward to eventually losing titles. |

The problem with digital movies off itunes is the audio bitrate is trash. This isnt a problem if you are watching on mobile devices or through tv speakers / soundbar but it makes a huge difference if you sunk money into a home theater setup.

that's the other thing, I have a decent 5.2.4 system in my basement and a good 5.1 system upstairs so sound is definitely important, something to keep an eye on for sure

In addition to higher bitrates, another thing to consider (which you most likely already know) is that many Atmos mixes are exclusive to the disc. This alone is an excellent reason to prefer physical media for anyone with an Atmos setup, or who may be considering getting one in the future.

No, but I've gone to mostly digital.
I rarely buy 1080p Blu-rays anymore other than some TV on Blu-ray, and I'm more picky about which 4K titles I purchase. I purchased the original "Space Jam" (Scottie Pippen's favorite movie) on 4K Blu-ray on sale from Amazon this week, and I'm not really sure why. A $4.99 4K digital copy would suit me just as well as the $9.99 disc, but oh well. I've been told that gigabit fiber is coming near me within the next year. It's only $12 more per month than my 25/2 internet service is, but I'll probably opt for one of the slower/cheaper speed tiers of 50/50, 200/200, or 500/500, which should do perfectly fine for getting rid of the occasional streaming issues I experience, making it even more attractive an option for me. |

I'm at about 60% digital....as I acquire the digital copies, I've started selling physical media....
Eventually, I will 100% digital. I started collecting VHS more than 40 years ago, I've dealt with Laser, DVD, Blu-ray and now 4K, I'm hoping all digital will stop the obsolescence.... |
